    Keep it MUM to everyone.

Good advice. I have a question, you guys use the word Mom as a abreviation of Mother but you use mum in this context?

We use mum because that's the sound you make when you are thinking and you go "mmmmmmmmm" sounds like "mum". But hey, we're Americans and we have the most screwed up vocabulary there is. My grasp of language and grammar is so bad that I'm not helping that endeavor to improve that is for sure.

Some of you may remember me from such posts as Identity Theft[^] Its been a couple of interesting months since then. When we reeived our credit reports from the credit agencies here we found there had been 30+ requests for credit information on my girl friend. Each one was the result of these people attempting to obtain credit in her name. They walked into a large department store here and using her photo drivers licence as ID (obviously there is a woman involved and she must be incredibly good looking) were able to rent a few thousand dollars worth of HiFi equipment. They even gave her bank account details for the rental company to take the payments out of. I guess the salesman are not known for their inelegance and the opportunity to make some commission melted their brains. They applied for credit cards on line from about 15 different organisations, some had been approved and the cards sent to a non-existent address that they were using. (The trick here is to use the address of a block of flats but use a unit number that does not exist. That way the postman generally leaves the mail on top of the mail boxes and they can drive by and pick it up) For about a month she would get an email each day with the details of the applications that were made the previous day. We then had to contact each of the credit providers, attempt to convince each of them that the applications were fraud and eventually provide statutory declarations to have the applications removed from her record. The police were of very little help. As there was no personal threat and the financial losses were small (didnt cost us any money in the long run and only about $5000 was taken from the various credit providers) they were not willing to escalate the issue to the fraud or electronic crime departments. The constable that came around when we were robbed is still responsible for any investigation but has about 15 other things he’s working on as well as doing his regular duties so I don’t expect him to spend much time on it. A lot of the applications they made were to smalle

The Indian Financial Market seems to be actively heading towards competing in this too. I had one interesting experience with a Telemarketer from Citibank India which I have blogged here http://viewsreviews.wordpress.com/2007/01/21/an-interested-encounter-with-citibank-telemarketer/[^] They would do anything even to forge your signatures and then send goondas in loan recoveries. :)

Unfortunately it becomes a bit of a problem when your local council requires copies of two bills, or other semi-official items sent to you in the post, in order to prove that you live at your address, to get a parking permit.

Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

I know my computer history and I know a bit what it was like back in the 80s when the PC was relatively new. When I was a youngster first discovering computer programming I had DOS, QBASIC, and an old C compiler. I read books on 8086/88 assembler, I have read the Intel processor manuals that go into intricate detail on every single thing in the processor and related hardware. I'm not saying I am a know it all but I spend most of my free time reading and learning about all aspects of computers and programming languages. I have so many books, from Motorola 68000 to complete schematics of the Apple II computer system, to the PDP/8 from the 60s. I cant say I have read them all but they certainly pull me in like a magnate when I am around them. I am not a hippy nerd that discovered HTML and started an uber geek sci-fi website.

I read Stephen Hawkings "A Brief History of Time", I kind of "get" some of the concepts, certainly don't understand them though.

I have the dummy address they've been using. Somewhere way way out west beyond the intellectual divide that is Strathfield (Appologoes to MM and any other westies) About the only thing I can get out of the cops is "DO NOT DO ANYTHING STUPID". Seems like good advice to me

My only experience with any of this was quite nice. I received a call from Master Card Fraud department asking if I had ordered anything from a Colorado bicycle parts store. The bicycle parts were to be shipped to New York. (I live in Santa Clara, California – Silicon Valley.) I suggested that an exploding package be sent. No? Well, send some sort of package and the local cops. I had to change my card number but that was it.
