What do you do to keep yourself fit and healthy. I am talking from the point of view of a programmer who works round the clock rarely finding time to relax. Recently our project leader gave a friendly spanking related to taking care of one'e health and family life too. How do you relax yourself on work and off work. I do go for a walk early in the morning. But still I do have frequent back aches that too real painful ones. What kind of exercises do you do. Will be interesting to know. Since you all are experienced in this regard you can give me better ideas. Recently I read this from one mail

Hmm...walk around the room when i'm frustrated :laugh:. But i guess that's about it :-O. Actually, I used to hike for miles, but i don't have the time anymore. I don't run, because my heart and lungs aren't in the shape that would allow me to...i'm the one that's standing doubled up, out of breath when everyone else has no problem I've been an "indoor" person my whole life, so it doesn't really bother me. My solution is to have a good chair, the kind that doesn't let you sit hunched over and doesn't have pressure points that bug you when you sit for hours. For some people it helps to remove the armrests. Sitting right is only part of it though. If the position of your arms is wrong, you can get carpal tunnel syndrome, which is pretty painful. Also set the screen refresh rate to above 60Hz on CRT monitors to keep your eyes from burning. Although 60Hz is the native refresh rate on LCD screens, they are built differently, so you don't have that problem there. Position light sources relative to your monitor in a such way that you don't have glare. Try to eliminate blinking lights, such as fluorescent kind, as those can really take a toll on your eyes. Get up and stretch every two hours, even if you are feeling comfy at the moment, because you might be falling asleep and not know it. A little bit of activity will always wake you up. Try not to eat too much to keep yourself from gaining weight. Fried foods such as doughnuts usually don't get metabolized completely, so they are something i normally stay from. Roswell:rose:

Yeah, I'm holding steady, but I really need to lose a bit. I *was* planning a trip to the Amazon in March, and when I cancelled that ( not enough time ), I kind of lost the impetus.

I used to weigh 260 pounds and I'm just barely~maybe 6' tall in shoes but 5'11" by most accounts. I was terribly fat I thought given I used to race mountain bikes and play soccer at the national level and a few other rather remarkable things in my younger days. Then I remembered something I'd learned. "The only easy day was yesterday." I remembered what that means. You always look at yesterday and learn from it. Apply what you've learned from yesterday in the form of work and make sure today is better than yesterday was. Hence, "The only easy day was yesterday." I'm in the habit of going to the gym every other day whether I have time or not. I make sure I go, PERIOD. If I have clients waiting one thing I've learned is that 2 hours every other day and 6 hours a week really doesn't take much away. I had to admit the reason I wasn't working out had nothing to do with time it just had to do with priorities. Working out wasn't a priority or I'd be doing it. Just about everyone here who says they are too busy to work out really means to say, "Working out just isn't a priority." So my answer to you, make it a priority. I've lost 50 pounds and still have pounds to go but I'm enjoying the change and I doubt I'll ever make working out a low priority again. There's just too much good that comes from it. So shift your priorities and move fitness up. You'll be glad you did. You'll just feel better. You'll never have the time so just do it. Then you'll be surprised to learn how much time you really have when something is important. - Rex:rose:

:-D I like biking, but it's sorta dangerous, a car almost hit me twice! So I turned into boxing until I broke my wrist:laugh: now I'm jogging, the safest, cheapest and best exercise:cool:

A friend of mine passed away last year aged 24 1/2 (he had a massive heart attack). While no one knows exactly what could have caused it (poor fellow was a teetotaller), some think it might have been due to extreme stress at work. He worked for USTRI, Trivandrum by the way.

I try not to sit on my rump too long :) I've set up my work area so I can take the laptop and work standing up if I need to. Also, sleeping a good 6.5 to 7.5 hours a night helps keep me on and even keel and relaxed all day. At 'home' I play with my dogs and my son. Keeps me very relaxed.

For back aches, I recommend sit-ups. Keeping those muscles strong and healthy also supports your lower back.

I dig holes to plant and transplant trees, haul dirt to make raised beds, chop firewood into pieces small enough to burn using an axe, walk around checking on plants, picking weeds, watering, and picking fruit, and all the other things that running an orchard and fairly large yard entails. Add to that taking walks, bike riding, swimming (in the summer), and horseback riding, and I keep in shape plenty well - even though I spend 8+ hrs on the computer on an average day. :)

I can't do these stuff. I had an accident sometime back hence doctor's advised me not to give too much stress or strain to my back. I did try this a few times but pain stopped me. Sit ups sounds like a good idea.

I'm very large framed. I carry weight really well and it's hard to see. That first picture though I'm 260. I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes without feeling a bunch of bile and acid coming up my throat because so much pressure was on my stomach. I was a size 42" waist now I'm a 34" waist. Being 10 pounds lighter is hard to tell in a photo. The next major plateau I hit I'll put it at the top of that page. :-D I'm hoping that will be by the end of February. I've got to get over this sinus infection and bronchitis though first...:sigh:

The single most important key to good health is getting at least 8 hours sleep every night. Also eating the largest meal of the day in the afternoon or at least 3 hours before you go to bed. And eating properly, not fast food. As for excercise I go mountain biking (cycling in the mountains off road on trails) at least 3 times a week. For back pain it's important to set up your computer and workstation according to the numerous ergonomic guides you can find all over the internet. However, that being said, I've found nothing as good for back pain as cycling and I've had a back back for many years from hard labour when I was young working in the forest.

Well you have to remember that you are a human first and a programmer second. You can't program if you're dead or incapacitated. There is no need to prioritise - your health and fitness is at number and isn't shifting. I get the same problems. Stiffness and soreness. I went to the chiropractor,and he x-rayed my back which looked like a race track s-bend. No wonder it was hurting. That was the tipping point for me. I bought an expensive ergonomic chair. I made a little box to put my screens up on so that they are higher and I'm not crouching over. I'm even thinking about that new MS ergonomic keyboard. But years of slouching are hard to erase, and it's not what you sit on, but your attitude to sitting that makes the difference. The best results come from a regular stretch and a good 30 minutes of exercise every day. I split mine between surfing in the morning before breakfast or running after work. Obviously living by the beach helps enormously but I decided a while back that life is for living, and if you get yourself somewhere you actually like, everything else will fall into place. Some people live in houses they don't like, next to neighbours they despise, and trudge off to jobs that make them miserable. How on earth are you supposed to find the motivation to stay healthy in that environment! Just remember though : if you do more of what you do, you'll get more of what you've got. So put down that donut!
