I waited until my mid-40s to do anything about it, and I still got it back. It's never too late to start getting in shape.

Unless you let it slide too far. :-D Death is kinda hard to recover from. I have to admit that you were one of my inspirations to get back into martial arts, and it's been one of the most positive things that I've done for myself.

me and my wife do jiu-jitsu. It's excellent for your health and a good relationship-therapy. Now we argue a whole lot less :-D oh and ps: to avoid back pains I never ever sit straight. I move about every ten minutes, then left, then right, then I lean backwards, etc...
V. I found a living worth working for, but haven't found work worth living for.

My wife and I do kung fu together and I've found the same thing. It really does wonders.

Awesome! Can I race a car on that? Where is that? Looks familiar, is it in Colorado someplace?

What do you do to keep yourself fit and healthy. I am talking from the point of view of a programmer who works round the clock rarely finding time to relax. Recently our project leader gave a friendly spanking related to taking care of one'e health and family life too. How do you relax yourself on work and off work. I do go for a walk early in the morning. But still I do have frequent back aches that too real painful ones. What kind of exercises do you do. Will be interesting to know. Since you all are experienced in this regard you can give me better ideas. Recently I read this from one mail

I have dislocated both knees at two different times in my life. My problem prior to April was weight and arthritis pain in the knees. I created a database in Access to track my calories. Using the website www.calorie-count.com, I have built a database of foods that I regularly eat. I pick the items from the database daily into a form which calculates my total for the day. This helps me to stay within my recommended calorie intake for my height. As far as exercise , I simply walk with a co-worker every weekday for a half hour around the block close to our office building. My knees no longer hurt at all, unless the weather doesn't permit us to walk for a couple days, and I've lost about 3.5 pounds per month since April. For you, I'd recommend keeping work a high priority if that is what you want in life, but don't put work at a higher priority than your health or your family. Like I said before, life is too short. You'll be surprised how just a half hour per day of some kind of physical exercise will clear your mind and help you focus more on your job with a clearer mind, while feeling more pain free. Hope these ideas help. Good luck! :)

Hey I've already started. Today I lightly jogged for a few minutes, took about 20 situps. Anyway for starters it's cool.

My tips to relax on or after work : On work, I sometimes make a break without coworkers, specially when I have a bug that I can't find or when I see that I don't see well how to achieve what I have to do (sometimes a piece of paper can help too in these two circumstances instead of typing for hours on the keyboard and then realizing that my code is non-sense). While going to (or returning from) work, I read a book or a magazine in the train. Of course, I try to avoid professionnal ones. For my concern, about coin collecting or books about financial history : perfect to think to something else than work. At home, in the evening and on weekends and holidays : reading, watching TV, and so on ... On saturday and/or sunday a little sleep in the afternoon for one or two hours if I fell tired. As I wake up at 6 AM, I try to go to bed before 11 PM to 11:30 PM seven days a week. Some other rules / tips : One simple rule : ABSOLUTELY NO WORK AT HOME ! FORBIDDEN ! Home is not my working place ! An other simple rule : to be able to say "NO!" to my manager. If I can't do a particuliar task (to short time or to difficult), I say simply "NO" to my manager. Of course, I try to say it to him as earlier as possible so that he can make a decision before it's too late. Try to talk to your co-workers. Sometimes they have information valuable to you that they didn't share and that can help you to solve your problem. Not always useful to stay late to try to solve a problem. I sometimes got the solution after the work while going to the railway station or in the train. If you don't agree with your manager or if you have any problem in your company, try to find an other one. When you go to bed, try to forget problems in your job. If you don't sleep well you can't be efficient. A tip if you can't get asleep after one hour in your bed because your are thinking to work (or something else that is worrying you) : 1. find a comfortable position in your bed (for example, on the back, right hand over the heart, left hand over the navel, one leg over the other making a "4") so that you don't have to move for the next few minutes 2. of course, close your eyes 3. breath SLOWLY and DEEPLY 4. think (SLOWLY !) in an endless loop "my breath is slow - my heart beats slowly - my eyelids are heavy - my legs are heavy" with one inspiration and one exhalation beetween each "-" and without thinking to anything else. About 30 to 40 seconds for each loop. Inspiration during the first words of each of the four parts and expiration
Very nice. The sleeping part is very true. :D

I had the same problems in the past. But now my wife usually tells me three times per day "Keep your contented face away from me, it is too much for me observing such a satisfied human being every day." You should regenerate your interest to the rest of your life :-) My schedule after my job is Monday, Wedbnesday - swimming pool (1 hour), Tuesday, Thursday - the lessons of english with eight sexy girls in my group (and unfortunately one more man, 2.5 hours), Friday - biking, sometimes gym (1 hour) Weekend - only for my family One-week vacation every quarter. Rule 1 - Do not break the timetable for more than 1 week! Rule 2 - Follow the timetable even forcing yourself during the first 3-4 months. PS. I suggest giving up smoking and dringking too much coffee, if you do so. I did stop, and my productivity increased for several times after initial period being at the bottom. Good luck! :-)

As far as physical health goes, I try to eat right (including avoiding junk food), I jog 2 days a week and walk 2 other days a week. I also lift weights 4 days a week. As far as other health, I am involved in church and read my Bible for my Spiritual health, and I make sure that I spend time with my wife and kids for my emotional health.

I do yoga. Yes, I know, it's not for everyone and it can be hard to find a class that suites you and your schedule, but I love it. I take a class only once a week and then I try to remember some of the exercises and do them at home a couple of times a week. It's perfect if you're sitting down all day and your posture isn't what it should be. And it's not as hard as you think. Angelika

Let's see Last night: 3 sets of: 15 vertical push ups 15 1 armed push ups each arm 30 regular push ups 55 crunches 20 leg raises 30 leg up crunches 20 reverse crunches 20 one leg knee bends each leg 55 knee bends Then a bunch of kung fu after the warm up. I used to have back aches, but doing a few light stretches before and after going to bed did wonders. I've even managed to work my way up to workouts like that a few times a week over the past year and a half. When I turned thirty I thought I'd never be able to touch my toes again, boy was I wrong.

Congrats. Make sure you take it easy and don't push it too hard. Proper stretching helps a lot too. When I started getting back in shape a little went a long long way. Just FYI, a vertical pushup is when you do a hand stand usually with someone holding your legs or balanced against the wall. If you can do one of those, you usually can do a lot more regular pushups. Leg up crunches are like regular crunches but with your legs suspended in the air. Knee bends are just standing and squatting down about half way. I'd start with regular push ups, crunches or situps, and knee bends, perhaps a few pull ups. Work with that a few times a week along with the walking and stretching and you should start feeling better once you get past the sore muscles. I'm glad to hear you taking the time to take care of your body, it's only going to get better from here on out.
