RAR vs ZIP

Suddenly every second submission I'm seeing is packed full of RAR nastiness. Has someone, somewhere decided that WinRAR is way, way cooler than Winzip and I didn't get the memo? Or is there a university somewhere preaching zip bad, rar good? It's just weird.
cheers, Chris Maunder

Yes. Just out of curiousity, did these submissions also exhibit a... creative approach to grammar, and look as though punctuation had been added afterwards, while the author was busy practicing his pogo-sticking? ;)

Amen! A few informal polls here found the story of Rarism is a story of denial and crazed-eye-preaching. WinZip has the better "use experience", and - as someone posted here recently - 7zip has the way better compression. WinZips recent desire for mo'money has hurt a quasi-standardness, but those Raristas have been lurking in the dark all the time. At work it's mostly asian customers It seems a distributor even repackages zip files we send as rar before they go further. It's just weird. Hint: WinZip 10 supports extracting RAR. Which makes it worth the money, 'cause you can spend the money on not WinRAR.

I hate the WinRar interface. X| Besides, Rar is not as ubiquitous as Zip.
Cheers, Vikram.

In all my recent XP installs, I've stopped installing WinZip, since the builtin ZIP-support of XP is enough as I see it. Oh, and I hate RAR.

Rar has always been way way cooler than zip. Better compression, solid archives, better spanning, zip just isn't in the same league. I never ever understood why zip files beat out both Rar and Arj archives. Winzip was the massive nail in the coffin for me. Horrid user interface, block whenever you click on a window to move it. Many software supports RAR and ZIP. UltimateZip supports both Zip and Rar. I have a brief writeup over here on UltimateZip: http://lavanyadeepak.blogspot.com/2007/01/ultimatezip-ultimate-desktop-utility.html[^]

I installed WinRar and it set itself as default for compreseeion. I'm too lazy to go and change that now, so if you recieve a rar from me then you know I have a good reason.

I've always found WinRAR to give better compression than WinZip 9 (although I haven't tried the new compression in WZ9 for compatibility reasons). RAR is popular in Europe, I'd actually never heard of it until I started exchanging files with my friend in Denmark.

It's 7-Zip for me all the way - I even registered. After I got used to the UI I really started to appreciate how easy and comprehensive it is. Not to mention that the 7z file is smaller.
Are all the 7-zip compression choices compatible with Winzip?

For me winRar is the best for compressing code and project, winZip has corrupted more than a file even WinAce with it's great compression did it. I never encountered any corrupted files in my backups with WinRar. especially when they contain massive amounts of files and folders

RAR has Unicode file support, AFAIK WinZip does not, or at least didn't in the past. That's probably why alot of non-English countries use RAR over ZIP.
