all that matters is that you are having fun, everything after that is for Negus to talk about.

Whatever you find to do, do it well, to the best of your ability, and don't worry about what you aren't doing. Even if you get into, *shudder*, VB programming it should be better than support work. You can work your way up from VB monkey to Respected Developer. :)

Here's the thing. Your company needs support people, and if that's what you're doing, why would they change that ? I worked for a company, and all I did was UI work ( ASP.NET ). I wanted to get into the middle tier ( not to the exclusion of UI, I just wanted to expand ). So, I taught myself T-SQL at home, worked through some books, spent some time looking through the middle tier, and announced that I'd done those things and wanted a shot at it. Any boss who ignores that sort of initiative, is a moron. In other words, spend your own time learning stuff that applies to the position you want, and announce you've done it, and ask for a chance to prove yourself in that role. I didn't say 'I want no more UI work', I said 'Give me a shot on this other stuff as well'. That sort of attitude, will always be rewarded.

Quite agreed with Paul just need change the position. Jump into the development section of the company from the support.

As far as I know, you have to learn programming yourself. You can learn only limited things at work. It is difficult to find an ideal job which will have everything. You have plenty of opportunity to learn yourself: You can write article here at CP by learning something outside the field of your work, you can participate in open source projects or you can do some other work in you spare time. I have learned more in my spare time then at work.

Maybe you're not much of a programmer and they're trying to give you subtle hints.
