Interesting article, especially the ReadyBoost stuff. Well, having run the advisor on three machines thus far, all of them have had misgivings expressed about a few drivers. And of course, they all barked at my development tools, but shucks, who needs Visual Studio or SQL Server? I feel the common sense returning already...

I can't believe I'm actually doing this. I just received the latest Microsoft Action Pack update, which contains Vista Business. As unimpressed as I've been with the new feature set, and despite the knowledge of exactly where the arrows end up in pioneers, I've been running the upgrade advisor on a few boxes to see if they can run it. So, let's review. Brand new operating system. Dubious driver support. Known compatibility issues with my development tools and heaven knows what else. What am I thinking??? Quick, people, explain to me why I'd rather go back to a career in Marketing than install Vista. Before my inner geek takes control and I lose what remaining common sense I possess...

Do it - you honestly won't regret it... (Ignore the eye candy and revel in the search that actually works and much faster boot and wake from hibernation times)

I say, try it out. You'll wind up uninstalling it at some point. But I think you need to give it a spin and see what's under the hood. I think it's the coolest thing I've ever seen in an operating system and I wish like all hades I could run it. But it has a few issues that are killing me and mainly hardware. (Having used Vista and owning a Mac I think Vista whoops a can-O-@$$ on a Mac.) Install it and just know that you might want to remove it to. Don't activate it just let it nag you for a bit until you are sure.

It is tempting. Unfortunately, all of the boxes that could handle it are boxes I actually have to depend on at the moment. Probably wait until I buy yet another PC. Heaven knows I need another one.

The Bunny Wars was long ago. However, if I thought that Vista would serve as an adequate Bunny Repellant, I'd install it on everything from my laptop to my microwave! :)

Do it...do it...do it. Why? No reason, but it's traditional when someone asks for advice to just say do it and then either laugh at the results or pretend you knew what you were doing all along.

I won't try to talk you out of it, Christopher; to each his own karma. But for the sake of your sanity, please leave one of your machines untainted. You might need to post a request for help, you know, and from what I hear, Vista is breaking networks everywhere it's being installed. The new 'security' platform apparently doesn't play well with others. If I'm too late to dissuade you, I commend to your reading Harlan Ellison's story, I Have No Mouth, But I Must Scream. It describes perfectly the feeling I get when I have connectivity problems that prevent me from reaching tech support. Fare well, and write if you find a computer that works...;)

Ah, nothing like a good night's sleep, a cup of coffee, and driver warnings on every box in the house to clear one's head. The impulsive urge has passed. Next time I need to buy a machine, I suspect I'll just order it preinstalled...
