did not see its shadow![^] which according to legend signals there will be an early spring. Punxsutawney Phil had seen his shadow every year since 1999 before today. Ah! Now THERE is conclusive proof of... ;) Marc

"the Groundhog Club, which conducts the annual event atop Gobbler's Knob" Surely they could have found somewhere more family-friendly?

Phil is only right about 40% of the time. Scientists have been doing research (apparently cancer research just isn't as cool as it used to be) and to be more accurate Phil should be replaced with "Phyllis." They discovered that female groundhogs are much better at determining the delay of spring. If they come out and eat right away, that means spring is near. If not, they go back into the burrow. They think it's linked with their motherly instinct.

I work off-site from the company office at a client office, but this morning I had to go over to the office to speak with my boss about something. Everybody in the office wanted to know if I could see my shadow as I was walking around, seeing as how I popped in on Groundhog day. :) Oh, the real groundhog in all of this is Wiarton Willy. ;P

Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] I agree with you that my argument is useless. Not only would Phil see his shadow here in Oregon, he might even have a chance for a sunburn :)
