3D desktop advantages
-
Vista has a 3D enabled desktop. Linux has Beryl/Compiz that are OpenGL enabled desktops. Mac OS X also has one. Apart from eye candy, what functional advantages do they give? I installed Beryl on my Linux machine. It has a number of cool effects. But, after 2 hours, I turned most of the effects off. They look cool for some time; then they start getting in the way. Now, I am back on the regular desktop. Thomas

I think that the biggest advantage may be the performance gains you get from getting the desktop drawing off the CPU like it was in XP. Plus the lack of those annoying white boxes that appear when moving a window on top of another window thats frozen.

Does XP draw off the CPU even when an advanced graphics processor is available? I guess only DirectX is able to use the graphics card effectively. With an 256 MB nVidia card, I could not get any noticable difference in CPU usage running Beryl. I am waiting for a Vista upgrade price -- the local retailer has not got even a price list. He was so confused about the different versions of Vista; and which version of XP upgrades to which version of Vista. I want to try Vista, but does not want to install a beta version. They should give a trial offer -- pay when you activate kind of thing. I bought my PC with OEM version of XP on Oct 24, and they give "dirt-cheap" upgrades for purchases made after Oct 26 -- talk about luck. Thomas

Most GDI drawing is CPU-bound. Very little in done through the graphics card. That's one reason why a new Desktop Window Manager and a new UI framework (WPF) were introduced.

3D desktops is a ploy to make the rich developers that can afford the graphics cards needed for the 3D effects so nauseous that they give up their posiiton.

We are a big screwed up dysfunctional psychotic happy family - some more screwed up, others more happy, but everybody's psychotic joint venture definition of CP

My mind always makes that connection when reading WPF - and I have to beat it to gett off that idea.

Yeah, just think when a large number of apps come down the road that are native (specifially designed for) WPF. The question of why the 3D graphics might start to vanish :)
