Damn IBM

I have just lost my second IBM 60GXP Deathstar in 4 months!!! That makes 3 HD's gone in 4 months(2 Deathstars and a Western Digital). I can't beleive I am that unlucky, is there anything hardware wise that is srewing my disks in? My HW is not as hot as my SW skills. :mad: Cheers, Steve. if(E_NOINTERFACE == pThat->QueryInterface(IID_IUnknown,(void**)&pUnk)) { // I aint no pUnk bitch! }

Can't remember the brand names off the top of my head, but I went for 400W AMD approved supplies from the overclocking store in the UK. if(E_NOINTERFACE == pThat->QueryInterface(IID_IUnknown,(void**)&pUnk)) { // I aint no pUnk bitch! }

Time for a karma check eh?

i would give serious look at the power supply. Make sure you have enough wattage to cover all your components. The sister of a friend of mine had a computer that had really weird things happening to it including destroyed harddrives and it actually came from underpowering the harddrives. hope you figure something out. i know how fustrating it can be. Make sure there's enough ventalation around the drives to keep them cool.

Make sure the fans are working properly too... :)

Yes. Temp is the worst killer of harddrives. Then probably the motor failing to spin up. Also it is good to have the drive mounted so that you minimize vibrations. John

I don't see how your hardware could be screwing up the disk, unless the controller firmware has some kind of glitch. I would check to make sure you have to latest BIOS for your motherboard/IDE controller. -- Dana Holt Xenos Software

Lossing that many drives is definitly above average and unless you have a rediculus amount of hardware in the box a approved 400 Watt should be plenty. I have a 300W in one machine and a 350 in a second with only losing one Maxtor in the last 4 or 5 years. So I would suspect your enviroment. Can you check your voltage coming in? Is there anything that is preventing circulation in and around the case? I have one friend who has lost 2 drives and one CPU this year. I finally checked the voltage coming in and it was 132.5 volts (vs 120 base for the US.) With no UPS (which may not have handled that big an overage) the powersupply jsut could not adjust. One item that may help is assuming it is not too old of a board some diagnostics will display temperature of the system (sandra "http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/sandra" is one) Good luck To be conscious that you are ignorant of the facts is a great step towards Knowledge.
