New coins

In Canada we've had 1 and 2 dollar coins for some time now. We had dollar coins before that but until they stopped making paper dollars and 2 dollar bills no one really used them. Now that they no longer make the paper dollar and 2 dollar bill it's not like we have a choice. People bitched a lot about it when it was announced, making jokes about having 40 pounds of change in their pockets etc, but it came about just after debit cards were prototyped and tested in Canada (Canada was IIRC the first country where debit cards were tested initially) and debit cards were so heavily adopted by the populace that they went into full usage of debit cards almost everywhere shortly after the initial test. Today if you stand in any typical line at a retail store you will very rarely see anyone using cash for a purchase unless they are under the age of 20 or over the age of 60. I'm just old enough that I still keep at least 100 dollars in cash in my wallet at all times just in case, but I doubt that's common for anyone younger than me.

I'll be 26 this summer. Depending on how recently I was at the ATM I might have anywhere up to $130 or so on me, averaging about half that. Plus ~$50-60 (cash + coin holder) stashed in my car. I don't use it a lot (credit card kickbacks more than anything else), but a few of the restaurants I eat at have slow credit processing systems, and I prefer to leave cash tips (heard too many horror stories about management delaying payment of CC tips, skimming off the top, or even keeping them entirely). I generally pull $100 at a time and spend down to about $20 in my wallet before refilling. OTOH if I'm going on a road trip I always make sure I have enough cash to cover all my gas both ways just in case (the same reason for the two 20's in my car).

I absoluately detest any and all pocket change. I hate the "jingle" when I walk, I hate fishing through the coins, and I hate the way they always tend to smell bad. I prefer the thin bills I can properly sort in ascending order and keep in my wallet. The plus side of the coins is that they last much longer than the bills, keeping the cost of producing them down. There's also a much higher chance of success for a machine designed to accept one-dollar coins than the machines designed to accept one-dollar bills. It sucks when the machine spits it back out because it's too frumpy to accept a bill with creased corners...

The new $1 coin takes a clue from the popularity of the State Quarter ($0.25) series. There will be a different US President coin released every 3 months for all of the Presidents [^]. In parallel, The US Mint is also releasing a First Spouse (the President's wife) $10 coin [^]. For those Presndents that were single or widowed, Lady Liberty will grace the front of the coin. Steve

note "new" in there.... they have come and gone for decades. Why I remember back in the day :rolleyes: as a wee lad I had several silver dollars from winning egg tosses with my little brother and I during summer picnics at the Mason's Lodge summer picnic (1st place 4 years in a row). so to answer your question... they make great gifts for kids, bright n' shiney. :-D

I know what you mean. I personally loved having the dollar coins. Some of the people I knew were all about how it's just not natural to have dollar coins. Do you know if they are still in circulation? I haven't seen them in a while. I don't think Walmart gives them out anymore either.

I think i got one in change at a gas station a while back, and the post office a bit before that. But no, i haven't seen them around much lately.

I got a $1 coint on my first trip. I've never seen one again. Did they finally bring it in ? Good, US coins are useless. dimes and pennies are almost indistinguishable in a pile of money, and as there is no 50 cent piece, a pocket of change is rarely worth more than $2.50. At home, I can have $20 in my pocket. Over there, I give it to beggars to get rid of it. And don't get me started on how useless the notes are. All white, you can't tell whaty ou've got without leafing through them.

Yeah, but once those notes are sorted, you still have to leaf through them, b/c they are all plain white paper. The other thing you guys need to do, is stop making pennies. Life works fine without them.

I wasn't aware it was out yet, I thought it was still a work in progress. Currently my job is to count money in a retail enviroment. I have not seen this new one at all yet, I rarely see the (can't spell it, the native american girl) or the susan b anthony coins. The only time I have seen people want them it is for novelty purposes. No dollar coin will replace the paper dollar.

Yup - although I keep some change laying around for parking and grocery carts. Other than that it's a rare day that I ever see cash. I use debit and credit cards for everything as do most of the people I know. Cheers, Drew.

:) When the 2 dollar coins first came out there was rampant stories about the central disk falling out of them by accident which the mint denied. So we tried to get one out and discovered you have to heat the hell out of it on a very hot wood stove followed by pounding with a hammer. US money always looks so crappy to me when I see it, dull and drab, not like money at all, more like play money or something. I'm sure they feel the same way about the rest of the world's money.

The dollar coin will never work no matter what is on it, the size or color of it! The problem is not the coin, it is because they still produce the paper bill. If they took the one dollar bill out of circulation, then the one dollar coin would rule. On a side note, I have always found it funny that they keep trying to design our paper money so that it cannot be counterfieted. Well, that may sound good, but we all know that is impossible. Also, I wonder why anyone would try since they could make counterfiet $100 bills with dates prior to the new funny money and use them anywhere (just not in large groups). I personally like the idea of a one dollar coin and might even enjoy a five dollar coin to go with it. Sure would be easier on those with bad vision.

Only to a point. Enough people would be skeptical about a bill more than a few years old that looks brand new to result in cops being called before too long. Changing the design repeatedly helps keep older designs obvious since they look different.

I've seen a counterfeit $20. I think they are easier to pass off because people don't pay close attention to a twenty like they do for a hundred.
