You know that whole Views->Details/List/LargeIcons/etc? Exactly how many times do I have to set it to Details to actually get it to Vista's internals that I want D E T A I L S view. Not Large icons whereI have pictures. Not some weird mixed mode in the My Computer (or, just Computer, now) folder... I keep selecting Details, then apply to all folders in the Tools/View Dialog box, yet, it randomly changes the columns, the way it looks. I want to kill someone. Or something. I noticed this back in one of the betas, but thought it was a bug so didnt give it much attention, but now....:mad::mad: anyone?

Wish I could help you. I keep setting the columns to be reasonable (size/type/date/attributes), yet some folders keep reverting back to something whacky and useless like author/title/rating. My Saved Games folder (never used) right now shows Name-Artists-Album-#-Genre-Rating :wtf: The usability of Explorer as a whole sure took a nosedive in Vista. :|

Thats what happens when they try to make the system more "new user"-friendly. They put in a bunch of features that are good, but once you start customizing(or, rather, _trying_ to customize), you see it doesnt work, and even worse, cant turn things off. I wouldnt object ifthis was on Vista HOme or something, but Ultimate, come ON, Ultimate is MADE for advanced users, why leave all these things there that most of us wont need..and they know we WONT need them. Seriously, it cant be THAT hard to switch a few libraries in thedifferent releases and have diffeent functionality. I rememebr same thing(well, to an extent) was with XP installation -> when you install it, it asks you to enter a few users' names to create. You ABSOLUTELY MUST enter at least one. Well, it creates them all admins. I'd understand for Home users(ease of use, depsite security problems) and all, but for XP Pro...thats just DUMB. As always, experience-based IMHO.

I don't understand the big deal in making this work right. If they just used default display settings on install, and kept all user changes (maybe with a button in settings to revert back to the defaults) in the user specific "Application Data" folder, it would have been so much easier for users. You could even copy the hidden file that stores your settings to another machine or user account and get all your favourite settings. It seems to me that Microsoft insists on complicating things beyond what it should be. I have yet not understood why they wanted users to write application specific settings in the registry. Writing in files would have been simpler. Creating admin users for "ease of use" is also dumb. Many applications local to a user can be installed into user accessible space without any administrative privileges. If you want to install a shared application, then the user must be prompted to provide the username/password just for the installer. I can use my Linux box and Mac OS X box without administrative rights without any problem. In Ubuntu Linux, it asks for the administrator password when bringing up the package manager. Once in the package manager, any number of installs and uninstalls can be done. OS X just prompts for a password when it needs administrative rights. Why can't Windows do it, if all other OSs can do it. Thomas

Really? I haven't used Vista, but I heard that Explorer was one of the few things that was *improved* in Vista. Your post is making me think again - if what you described is one of the better things, I'd hate to see the worse stuff. :~

I believe I once read (on Raymond Chen's blog, here: http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/05/27/143042.aspx#143493[^]) that explorer only remembers the last couple of hundred folder custumizations. So if you have customized a lot of folders, the oldest custumizations will be lost. The solution I'm using consists of turning of per folder customization and setting all folders view to details. Go to Tools menu > Folder Options > View TabPage > "Apply to all folders" button Also uncheck the option "Remember each folder's view settings" in the list on that same TabPage Hope this helps [Edited to add a link and some extra info]

That's an XP feature, not a vista one. Mommy MS knows better than you what columns you really want in your details view. Noone should ever care about the date stamp on a music file.

Dear God man ... you need to be saved from this madness ... go get Total Commander[^] and be done with Explorer already. yes ... I know TC isn't all pretty like Vista's explorer, but when it comes to my tools, I'll take functionality over looks any day.

Even better... put an MP3 in a folder containing 100's of documents and it will display the lot as if they were music files.
