Would you like if a ___ application:mad:(Just like the idiot Yahoo msgr X| X| ) installs a ___ hunk of its files in the program files directory by default? I'm trying to keep off the applications from the windows drive, but bullshits like yahoo __s straight into the drive.:wtf: Why do they want to do it? Is that so difficult to make a product that lets the user choose the target directory?? I always love the atand-aloned products..to name a few like Foxit,Winamps, winzip,ACDSee,Snagit,PEC  *rant -- modified at 4:17 Monday 26th February, 2007

If it's their natural place, then why would other "sane" applications give us a chance to select the target location? And dont you find it rude if it starts to run the progress bar without asking anything for a courtesy? :| .Btw,Yup I'm running out of space on that drive. :sigh:.

Why shouldn't the user choose? Back when I had my PC, I used to keep only the OS and a few other stuff (AV, .NET framework, etc) on my C drive. D was for another OS. E was for data (pics, documents, etc). F was for applications. G was for music, H for CD dumps, and I for games (not that I played any, but my brother used to). That was just the Windows partitions. I also had Linux. ;P

                                  Cheers, Vikram.

Why? Isn't that their natural place.

You must be kidding. Never ever install anything in the windows directory, best way to loose everything if your setup crashes.

How do you recover stuff anyway without re-installing when windows crashes. I am all in favor of keeping data on a separate drive. But applications have to be re-installed anyways to function properly after Windows crash. Also most applications install some of their files in Program Files\Common Files and Windows\System32 directory. Even though you may be happy that you have installed an application on an another drive you still have these files on the system drive. My policy is simple, for applications that come with installer install them in the program files directory which is the default. Other downloaded applications like those in sysinternals suite, reflector etc. which can just be copied, put them in a separate drive. This way when I have to rebuild the apps, I don't loose the data as well as those applications. For apps like VS 2005 there is no way to make them run after an OS crash without re-installing. Also I set my profile directory (Documents ans settings\) to reside in the data directory. That way the data is safe to some extent during a system crash. In general I have found that not installing some application in Program Files directory lead to weird behaviors.

I am not saying that the user should not choose. I was asking why he wanted to change the drive.
