Monitor size question

I have a 17in LCD @ 1280x1024. I'm curious to know what size monitor (or resolution) do you think is the best for a programmer and regular computer user? I know some of you will say 24in or 30in but that is just bragging. What resolution do you use?

3, 21" monitors linked with a spanning desktop at 1600x1200 per monitor. On one project I do in the fall I will light up number 4. Bragging... I'd argue it isn't. I'm way more productive than I would be otherwise. How do I know this? I slowly added monitors until I found my optimum (3 monitors) and my peak (4 monitors). I love having 3 and wouldn't go back to 2 without a bitter fight and I mean a fight of epic proportions.

I have the same as you and have been working with it pretty hard core for I guess 2 years now, but now that you mention it, I've given it some thought and I wish I had a 19 or 20 inch because I find myself leaning towards it far too much. When I'm working I want it to fill my field of view as much as possible, but I don't want to sit 12 inches away from it either. I think a 20 would be better for normal desktop distance, 24... maybe 30 is just "because you can". Too big a monitor would not be a better thing in all likelihood.

Currently I run 3 19" LCDs running at 1280x1024. It's not bragging really, it's all about being able to focus and not having to swap applications too often while staying in budget. As for what I think is best, the more work space the better as long as it isn't distracting and your eyes are relaxed. I hope to upgrade to a pair of 30" LCDs this year but I'll have to see if it is in the budget come november.

I've programmed with a Teletype for I/O, a 9" monochrome screen, a 12" color monitor, and most recently a 19" LCD screen. What tool you use is a matter of personal preference, but don't let yourself feel limited by the tool. If you can program, you can do it on a toaster with a 40x8 character display. There is no "best" - only what you find usable.

23" Apple Cinema HD Display @ 1920 x 1200 is the only way to fly. I bought mine about eighteen months ago. It is the sharpest, brightest, most perfect monitor I have ever used. Everyone that has seen it cannot get over how beautiful anything and everything displayed is on this monitor. I bought mine at an Apple store for $1500 + tax. The price is down to $999 + tax.

I had a 17inch CRT back in 2005. I had it for 6 years and back when I got it I thought it was huge. :laugh: Previously I used a 13inch CRT and the image wouldn't even stretch to the edges. I ran mine at 1152x864 for a while but it became blurry, I also tried 1280x1024 for a while but I couldn't stand the 6ohz refresh rate. I bought a Viewsonic 17in LCD for $250 as a Christmas present for my self in Jan 2006. It has a very good image for the price I paid for it. It was a steal at the time.

2 Philips 180S at 1280x1024. Two monitors are great in terms of productivity, I prefer two 17" monitors than one 24" monitor. Of course two 24" would be great, but I believe htat 3 19" monitors at 1600x1200 each would be great (thinking on the apps that I'm running normally).

Home = Work. I have a 22" running 1680 x 1050. I have a friend who has 2 20" running the same res. he is also a programmer and I will admit it might be nice to have 2 but I don't NEED it. His company provided them. I have to pay for my own.

I use a 20in TFT (1600x1200) @ work - for a desktop, that's the smallest I'd want to use. As for laptops, 1600x1200 on a 15.4in TFT is the nicest screen I've used, but my current laptop is a 14in iBook with 1024x768 - luckily, I don't run Visual Studio on that - TextMate[^] with a couple of terminal windows fits nicely and is adequate for my development needs on OS X.

When I'm working I want it to fill my field of view as much as possible, but I don't want to sit 12 inches away from it either. I think a 20 would be better for normal desktop distance, 24... maybe 30 is just "because you can". Too big a monitor would not be a better thing in all likelihood.

If you have control of the budget, just do it - 20" screens (that are quite good enough for development) are so cheap these days. Don't get a 19" one, though - their resolution is the same as 17".

This might be a dump question but, do you need 2 graphics cards to have two monitors? I have seen reviews of cards that say they support duel video, but the pictures have one monitor output.

At home same as at work: 19" TFT 1280x1024. Some colleagues use wide-screen monitor, and I find those way better then regular monitors for VS, so I want one too :)

You can either use a card with two output conectors or two cards - we're talking a decent brand here, like NVidia or ATI.

Yeah sure! ;) Just admit that it's 90% coolness and 10% productivity.
I cannot afford coolness. If I had it my way I'd voluntarily be poor and homeless in the tropics. Unfortunately tonight has reminded me (just got back from hospital and now get to stand watch for 2 to 3 more hours) that I have to stay within 10 minutes of an ER or it won't go so well for one my kids.:sigh: They tell me that someday she will grow out of this. My laptop has a 15" widescreen @ 1680 x 1050, and when I'm on a client site I usually have to use whatever (usually dodgy CRTs) they have available. My two desktop boxes run a 19" @ 1440 x 900 and 19" @ 1280 x 1024, switched via a KVM. I've pretty much outgrown them now though - if I could get hold of them (they're hard to get here, unless you want to fork out £700 or so) I'd ditch them both for a pair of 24" Acer AL2423 widescreen monitors (1920 x 1200).

I was running at the same resolution as you for ages then decided what the hell I'd find out what all this hype about dual monitors is so bought a cheapo graphics card and added it in with another 17" CRT running again at 1280x1024 and the differences are astounding. Only problem I had was desktop icons wouldn't be showed in full 32bit colour only 16 colours but somehow that has rectified itself.
