Monitor size question

This might be a dump question but, do you need 2 graphics cards to have two monitors? I have seen reviews of cards that say they support duel video, but the pictures have one monitor output.

You can either use a card with two output conectors or two cards - we're talking a decent brand here, like NVidia or ATI.

I cannot afford coolness. If I had it my way I'd voluntarily be poor and homeless in the tropics. Unfortunately tonight has reminded me (just got back from hospital and now get to stand watch for 2 to 3 more hours) that I have to stay within 10 minutes of an ER or it won't go so well for one my kids.:sigh: They tell me that someday she will grow out of this. My laptop has a 15" widescreen @ 1680 x 1050, and when I'm on a client site I usually have to use whatever (usually dodgy CRTs) they have available. My two desktop boxes run a 19" @ 1440 x 900 and 19" @ 1280 x 1024, switched via a KVM. I've pretty much outgrown them now though - if I could get hold of them (they're hard to get here, unless you want to fork out £700 or so) I'd ditch them both for a pair of 24" Acer AL2423 widescreen monitors (1920 x 1200).

I have the same as you and have been working with it pretty hard core for I guess 2 years now, but now that you mention it, I've given it some thought and I wish I had a 19 or 20 inch because I find myself leaning towards it far too much. When I'm working I want it to fill my field of view as much as possible, but I don't want to sit 12 inches away from it either. I think a 20 would be better for normal desktop distance, 24... maybe 30 is just "because you can". Too big a monitor would not be a better thing in all likelihood.
I was running at the same resolution as you for ages then decided what the hell I'd find out what all this hype about dual monitors is so bought a cheapo graphics card and added it in with another 17" CRT running again at 1280x1024 and the differences are astounding. Only problem I had was desktop icons wouldn't be showed in full 32bit colour only 16 colours but somehow that has rectified itself.

You can either use a card with two output conectors or two cards - we're talking a decent brand here, like NVidia or ATI.
The cheapest NVidia dual display card I've seen is 7900 GS, which is not very cheap (but offers good performance for the money). On the ATI side, you can find the 9550 or X1300 models with dual display support, and these models are close to the lowest price you can get for a video card these days.

You could build your own monitor from scratch allowing any customerizable resolution of your choice or even have it adjust to your vision capibilities automatically, using a retinal sensor. ;P

Work: 2 x 17" LCDs @ 1280x1024 Home: 1 x 19" LCD @ 1280x1024 I am very pleased with my 19" monitor, but I would try out a bigger one.

I have 2 LG 1730s LCD monitors with a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 running off a single graphics card, although one of them is through a KVM to a second PC. The big benefit for me is that they are jsut so calm for my eyes, it's really like looking at paper all day, no annoying flicker at all. I regularly use Adobe PhotoShop CS, and the great thing with having a second monitor is that you can stick all the tools on the second monitor and leave more real estate clear on the first monitor for actual image work. I also use UltraMon http://www.realtimesoft.com/ultramon/[^] which give me a second task bar on the second monitor, this means that the apps running in the second monitor only show up on that task bar and don't all hog the first task bar.

I have a "17 LCD monitor with 1280x1024 resolution. I need the high resolution for for all the Visual Studio sidebars. :)
Trinity: Neo... nobody has ever done this before. Neo: That's why it's going to work.
If you added a second (or third) screen, you could un-dock those pesky sidebars and park them on another screen, and that really helps.

Office: 2x 20" LCD each 1600x1200 Home: 24" LCD 1920x1200 + 19" CRT 1280x1024 IMHO dual-monitor is must for UI development: one monitor for the debugger, and one for the debuggee :-D

My LCD monitor is 1920x1200. I normally detest working in anything under 1280x1024, although for short stretches I can manage on my laptop's built-in screen, which is 1440x900 (but I have to change the IDE's font size and make it smaller). For a regular Joe User with good eyesight, I'd say 1024x768 is the minimum, 1280x1024 preferable. Try browsing today's sites in 800x600 or *gasp* 640x480 and you'll be hating life.

I use a 15'' LCD @ 1024x768 and a 21'' CRT @1280x1024 on same machine with dual view. That's the best for testing apps and grafix in multiple 'looks', coz most of our customers still have CRTs and we use static resolutions.

1 x 20" @ 1600x1200 (main) 1 x 17" @ 1280x1024 (side) Plus NVidia multiple desktops (4 off) for when I have four copies of VS running. VS has so much screen clutter that you can never see more than a few lines on a 17" monitor so the 20" helps. :-)

Not necessarily; it depends on the card. I have a NVIDIA GeForce something-or-other which has one output. However it's supplied with a splitter cable that allows two monitors to be connected. Cheers Neil

I've been running a 19" + 15" dual LCD setup for a few years. Today I bought a 20" and will use the 19" along side it and move the 15" to a spare. Once you start using multiple monitors there is no going back.

I've been denied the new 17 inch LCDs. :| I can run 1280x1024 on my current monitor, but I find it strains my eyes. Fonts I use: Consolas size 12 on VS .NET Bitstream Vera Sans Mono size 11 on WSAD

I have a 19" monitor at home office which is nicer to work on than a 17", but not that great. At work I use a 17" laptop with 1920x1200 resolution. This is a fantastic resolution to work with, and I really want to buy a 24" screen for home to get the same resolution on my desktop. In a recent job I used a two monitor set-up for the first time. I had always doubted how much use it would be, but to be honest it was amazing. To me there was a huge productivity increase - especially if you develop websites - one screen with code, one with screen. Is much easier than I imagined to mouse between screens etc. So whatever you do, save your 17" and hook that up as a 2nd screen.
