Monitor size question

I have a 17in LCD @ 1280x1024. I'm curious to know what size monitor (or resolution) do you think is the best for a programmer and regular computer user? I know some of you will say 24in or 30in but that is just bragging. What resolution do you use?

1920 x 1200 on 17" LCD (my laptop) + second monitor 1280 x 1024 17" LCD when working at home.

2 * 20" both at 1600 * 1200
System.IO.Path.IsPathRooted() does not behave as I would expect
I also use 2 monitors, this is the best configuration (not only for development, actually I don't know what kind of use this wouldn't be good) anyway 1 is at 1024*768 15'' and the other at 1280*1024 19'' it would be better that they had the same size and resolution, but the smaller one can't only handle more than that, and the bigger, well, since it's bigger (I mean it is already different) I put on a better resolution, don't think would make a bigger difference than it already is so you ask why I bought 2 different monitors, well, I only had 1, I'm using 2 monitors for about 2 weeks, so when buying the new one I choose to buy a better since they are cheaper now

home: single 20" 1680x1050 girlfriend's: single 20" 1680/1050 (her's is prettier) work: dual 30" 2560x1600 hey YOU asked what we use. ;P Honestly, the larger the better, but don't break the bank for it. 20/21" is good, 24" better, 27" better still, 30" heaven.

I've programmed with a Teletype for I/O, a 9" monochrome screen, a 12" color monitor, and most recently a 19" LCD screen. What tool you use is a matter of personal preference, but don't let yourself feel limited by the tool. If you can program, you can do it on a toaster with a 40x8 character display. There is no "best" - only what you find usable.

3, 21" monitors linked with a spanning desktop at 1600x1200 per monitor. On one project I do in the fall I will light up number 4. Bragging... I'd argue it isn't. I'm way more productive than I would be otherwise. How do I know this? I slowly added monitors until I found my optimum (3 monitors) and my peak (4 monitors). I love having 3 and wouldn't go back to 2 without a bitter fight and I mean a fight of epic proportions.

When I bought my monitor I was going to get a 19inch but I was on a very tight budget and since the 17inch monitors use the same resolution I figured I would save some money.

I am not so sure of that. I have a 19" at work and its native resolution is higher than what I have on my 17".

nope, Dell 30" LCD, the projectors are lower resolution.

Well, a few days ago I bought a 5-foot screen... still waiting for the guys to bring it over. I think it will help my eyes because I can sit back a bit. Will be great for movies too :) At work I'm on a 21-inch, but I think it's a bit too big for a desk (1920x1200). I find that I use smaller windows on it, while on my other screens I usually maximize.

Yes, you are right. My 19" at work is on 1280x1024 too.

17" is great for home use. For development I can recommend 19", because it just gives you that little more room for placing the various windows in VS2005 or any other IDE you use. The best setup in my opinion is still the dual screen setup in 17" or 19". My current setup is great too, but a little overkill in terms of money needed. I currently use 22" widescreen and that is huge :D
