Im almost ready to go back to XP agan -_- I specifically specify the view for te folder, then on the propeties/customize tab say to apply to all subitems. Apply, OK. Go inside one folder, nothing changed, still some weird random look. I press the _BACK_ button, and the parent folder (whose lok i was customizing) is back to some sh***y look again. I f#*%$^g hate this thing.:mad::mad: ahhm feels better now. a bit.

Yep, the way Explorer decides what columns to show seems to be driven by a random number generator. :sigh:

More like the random number generator shown on XKCD[^] With a few twists of course(ie, any number returned may mean a few things )...

It was broken pretty badly in XP at first too. SP1 improved things a bit though, so if you can just hold on for a year or so...

It appears that everybody is under the impression that I approve of the documentation. You probably also blame Ken Burns for supporting slavery.

How long did we wait for XP SP1? And how long have we _had_ XP? I think I can wait....though i still wanted Vista to work properly. Ah well, Windows is Windows is Windows...

..or maybe try to install XP SP1 on Vista... after all, it does contain the bug fix!

I'm sure we've all HEARD of the Dvorak keyboard, but I've never even bothered to tap a key on one, for one thing because I've never even SEEN one in-person - have you ever seen one in a retail store ? Better, just not ENOUGH better ! The reaction of a lot of folks to the Office-2007 ribbon is ho-hum, and I'm with you on the Windows-Explorer. Yes it offers a couple of new features, but the OLD stuff that used to be EASY ? (( Spolsky interface )) queried on Amazon gets you to Joel's book on UI. There's a story in there about how a lady "broke down in tears" because she could not figure out how to accomplish a task, during a usability test. Just between us, yours truly Mr. Veteran Programmer sometimes had that feeling on encountering the Vista explorer ! Two mainly-gratuitous-UI-change wallops at once, bad policy, I agree. It needs to be LOTS better before you leap !

I think it contacts Microsoft, and compares your selected columns with what Microsoft uses as a defaul, then provides a new combination of the two that it thinks you really meant to select. "We know what's best for you - cancel, or allow?"

It may have worked nicely in SP1, but XPSP2 is just as bad. I was hoping that Vista had fixed the problem with folder customization, but guess not! It'd be nice to just go back to using Desktop.ini for folder configuration. :(
