Y'all, Just an update: We've narrowed it down to the following server names: Backburner, GBTW, Ollie, Larson, Baconss (Business and Chairmans Office Network Storage Solution), Walker (Texas Ranger), and BjornBorg. Last one off the list was JonSagara Taking a vote on it tomorrow.

You may be too late to offer changes. However, I like to pick names that can be used in sets. Ie. if you want to name a server Walker then other pieces of the system would have other characters names from the same series so they could easily related. Having one server name Walker resting on the Jupiter Cluster doesn't really make must sense :p

See, herein lies the problem. When I started here almost 6 years ago, we had a server, Parnassus. Parnassus died, and I decided to start going w/ South Park people. First server was MRHAT, then CHEF, the networked tape library was CARTMAN (it's big and fat). Then we get a new server, and my boss vetoes my call to make it either MRTWIG or GARRISON. He wants to name it Parnassus, after the old one. I had already retired ARES and MINOS, but they're now back in limited web serving service. So long story short, it's a giant mess. I'd love to sit down and rename everything, but I'll have to wait until we're under new management, then do it on the fly. So until then, we've kind of decided to fly by the seat of our pants.

We had a swamp theme going here. The boss used to run a project called SWAMP (Students Working Approved Management Projects). So their server was Swamp. Other servers were Lizard, Cobra. The police station got Sarge, Felon and Rookie.:laugh: Then, the new boss came in, and everything's Apps1....Apps18. X|
He was a snowflake, like other "unique" snowflakes, falling down, getting stepped on, and pushed aside to disappear.

I name my domain, servers, and PC's after roman caesars: Domain: rome with machine server names like: VARO, NERO, LEPIDUS, JULIUS, OCTAVIUS (CALIGULA excluded!). Other ideas could be Norse or Grecian gods Domain: valhalla machine names: thor, balder, loki, freya, etc. -- or for the Greeks --- Domain: olympus machine names: zeus, hercules, athena, hermes, etc. Makes it kinda fun to create add new machines and research the names. I guess it's too late but for the others who might need names for their servers, how about ratchet, bumblebee, mirage, jazz, smokesscreen, sunstreaker, wheeljack, prowl, ironhide or the bad guys: soundwave, ravage, laserbeak, rumble, buzzsaw, starscream remember them? :-)
