The soapbox is for posts that aren't appropriate elsewhere. It is not a place to start flame wars, troll, push agendas or abuse the community. It's a forum like any other forum with the same rules of responsibility and civility. This is pathetic and honestly, I'm ready to just close it up.

    cheers, Chris Maunder

That's what Ilion wants. It seems that most - if not all - of the SoapBoxers are united in their opinion of the Ilion person. What you probably should do is find out who this guy's ISP is and report him for abuse, and then block the ISP's IP subnet from being allowed to post on CP.

Many ISPs have "no abuse" clauses as part of their service contract with an individual. Typically, what constitutes "abuse" is determined by the ISP. Complaints from a large, well-established site like CodeProject, along with supporting evidence, could at least get the kid a stern warning.

My understanding was that people were ignoring him, so he repeatedly started posting the same thing and THEN they were marked as spam/abuse.

You may notice that it was four specific posts I kept reposting: 1) The "definition" of what the Soapbox is, along with its "rules" 2) A mock apology that I had apparently misunderstood what I'd just posted 3) A link to a thread (from Oct or so of last year) at Internet Infidels, and minor commentary on the reasons I found that thread interesting 4) A response to A**** originally made last night in a long "vanished" thread, having to do with my assessment of what my good friends here have been doing to my posts for the past two or so days. Good luck reading this before the "grown-ups" vanish it.

I don't think closing the board would be a solution. Odds are he would just start up in another one of the boards, like the Lounge or the General Discussions. Then if you closed those, he'd just spam the programming boards with it all. Until now, while some people have gotten a bit... overzealous in their discussions, it hasn't been a problem. One person shouldn't be able to ruin something like this.

That would be a question to address to Mr Craig, now wouldn't it? But, it's not exactly as though I've made a secret of my identity. After all, being no one in particular, I can't really imagine that a total stranger in who-knows-where would have a pressing desire to know my name or city. I assure you, I'm not trying to find out where Mr Craig lives, or if he even is 'Tim Craig.' But, since he seems so interested in me, let's see if he can pin-point my location on a map.

Actually it isn't. What he wants is to be able to post his opinions and have them stay in view and not be voted as abusive. Whether or not his posts are abusive, spam, or even vaguely appropriate is another thing. I can block him easily but I'd prefer to listen to his side first.

                                      cheers, Chris Maunder

Well, unless you're gonna kill the abuse feature and give him special "sticky post" status, he's not gonna get his way. FWIW, I watch this forum pretty closely, and i'm pretty sure not a single one of his threads was deleted until he started re-posting them after they'd been pushed off the first page. And that was after about a week of watching him cut quotes from threads that had been played out and start new threads composed of his "answers" to these quotes. Seeing someone stroke their ego by pasting together fake arguments isn't new, or interesting, or even that much of a problem in and of itself - i've seen this sort of thing fairly often on USENET. The difference here is, we don't have our own personal kill-files, so it's hard to ignore such noise. Clicking Abuse isn't really a good substitute, but it's that or leave. And i had a good sub-thread on pies and global warming going, so leaving was out...
