      Now, what for ? I mean what data can take you up to 1TB ? I am living with 80 Gb, and that is way much than will ever need, I think.

      Backups?  I use my external 500GB one for short-term backups and every so often I'll back up the really important stuff to DVDs.

        You'd be surprised how quickly these artsy types can fill up space if they start taking photos or downloading music / movies.

          3 x 160 GB = 480 GB, and it's at least half empty. BTW, I have 2 disks for a RAID0 array, and the other disk is just for backup.

            Adding up the drives in my main box, 640GB, + 80 in the laptop.

              at home - 250Gb in the box and 1Tb external (NAS - network addressable storage). The external box is used mainly to store photos for a company I do part time work for. Photo catalog contains 56000+ photos (most are 8" x 10" @ 300 dpi) Steve

                As three quarters of the Lounge knows by now, I don't have a PC.

                  which leaves you with 970Gb of free space to reach the TB. Plus your whole life is not sufficient for listening to >30Gb ... so what is the point again ?

                  I have 110 GB of music (and adding at least a new cd every week to the mp3 collection) which is around 20K songs (and yes, i've already listened around 80% of them, according to my iTunes track count). Also, I have around 300GB on movies. Finally, I have around 20GB on pictures. So far, I have 430 GB. Plus the programs, Windows XP, my code and games, I use a bit more of 500 GB. I have two 280 HD, so I'll be running out of space in four or five months. My conclusion: I envy that 1 TB :).

                    My guess (for personal use) is music and television. The latter eats up disk space like crazy.

                          Let's see...320GB x 6 (4 installed in one dev box, and 2 in USB drives) + 2 x 120GB (both in dev systems) + 160GB (laptop) + 80GB + 40GB (both mini-USB HDDs). So around 2440GB, or 2.4TB. :->
