I was just reading a short article on FoxNews about celebrities and their phobias. What are your phobias? I am afraid of spiders and crowded places because I am afraid a fire will break out. I was afraid of fire for years and wasn't sure why. Turns out I mimicked my parents and took the hot car cigarette lighter to my lips as a toddler and hated all hot things after that. I didn't even try to light a match until college. I used to keep a car door open while starting the car in case the car started on fire during startup and then I could make a quicker getaway. I finally conquered that fear. I still hate spiders and will panic at packed places (like the mall during the holidays). Not sure if I will get over those. Anyone willing to admit your phobias? BTW, what would the fear of not being able to read CP be?

Electricity. People. Including (but not limited to): crowds, public speaking, wide open spaces (with people in them), eating with people in front of me, and eating with people behind me.

I suspect I have a mild fear of being disconnected from the web for any extended period... As a kid, I was scared of heights. A friend has dragged me onto roller coasters in DisneyWorld, and again in Vegas this past week. I am not sure if you'd call it a phobia, but I certainly am never comfortable the first time. I am never scared of it breaking, or of any accident, I fear the unknown of a ride I've not been on before. Now I know, I'd do the rock'n'roller coaster again any time, and I won't do New York, New York again without a gun to my head :-)

CPhogia. :-) My phobias...I've gotten over almost all phobias. I used to fear heights until I went rock climbing and that got me over it. I used to fear roller coasters. Now I love them. I guess I have a kind of social phobia; I avoid social situations regularly. :-) I don't like being around a lot of people I don't know, and I have a hard time chit chatting with people I don't know.

I have to admit, I totally suck at meeting new people. I don't know why, at the MVP summit, I was happy to get up and play guitar/sing a couple of songs (talk dirty to me and Panama, FWIW ), but I have a hard time at dinner sitting with people I don't know. If people come up and say 'hi' first, then I am fine.

Height - if I drive on the outside lane of a high bridge I have to close my eyes. Standing at the window of a 50+ story building isn't fun. Driving the road to Hana was a noghtmare. Fire - death by, has to be the most horrid thing going.

I hear you. I play guitar and sing at a small Bible study every week, no problem, but I feel awkward trying to talk with random people. Once I get to know people, I'm totally relaxed. My wife is the same way. We both actively avoid social situations where we have to talk to lots of people we don't know.

Heights without a sturdy barrier. Which means climbing ladders is problematic. If there's a railing or a window, then no problem. I found a solution, based on something I read a long time ago on our senses. The problem is, I don't fill the space with my "presence", if you will. So it creates that feeling of being sucked into the void. If I pause and just focus on mentally touching the distant objects and filling the space between me and the horizon, then I'm actually fine. The guitar is a great prop. I would never sing without playing ( I admit, in part because I can play, but I can't really sing ).

Sounds like an awful lot of work. I'm hoping if i just eat enough, often enough, i'll be able to fill spaces without a second thought...

I am afraid of spiders and crowded places because I am afraid a fire will break out. I was afraid of fire for years and wasn't sure why. Snakes! I saw many snakes being killed in front of me when I was a small kid and I am immensely afraid of snakes. I can't even stand rubber snakes and I scream. Since my first car accident about 4 months back, I am afraid to drive in the left lane in a non-divided highway.

BTW, what would the fear of not being able to read CP be?

i thought phobias have to be irrational fear of? most of what's been mentioned here are pretty much reasonable fears to me... i don't think i have a phobia but i was diagnosed to have mild ocd but that's another story... (notice the ellipses at the end of my sentence...) :-)

I do not like being around people I do not know and I absolutely don't like being around or in a crowd of people. I also despise talking on the phone, especially if I have to leave a message.

That used to be a big phobia of mine. I got zapped a couple of times as a kid, and I've had dreams of death by electrocution (not in the chair though). Doesn't bother me one bit anymore..

You are not alone, Ed. I'd wager both counts are something to do with growing up in the countryside where you pretty much just go outside and make your own way amongst all the slithery snakes, hairy spiders, smelly rats, tall water towers and small dark holes in the ground. I think when you've swam in slurry you become physically immune to allergies, and when hanging by your feet from a 30 foot oak tree with a hammer and length of rope in your hands it is hard to be scared of heights.
