I was just reading a short article on FoxNews about celebrities and their phobias. What are your phobias? I am afraid of spiders and crowded places because I am afraid a fire will break out. I was afraid of fire for years and wasn't sure why. Turns out I mimicked my parents and took the hot car cigarette lighter to my lips as a toddler and hated all hot things after that. I didn't even try to light a match until college. I used to keep a car door open while starting the car in case the car started on fire during startup and then I could make a quicker getaway. I finally conquered that fear. I still hate spiders and will panic at packed places (like the mall during the holidays). Not sure if I will get over those. Anyone willing to admit your phobias? BTW, what would the fear of not being able to read CP be?

I do not like being around people I do not know and I absolutely don't like being around or in a crowd of people. I also despise talking on the phone, especially if I have to leave a message.

Electricity. People. Including (but not limited to): crowds, public speaking, wide open spaces (with people in them), eating with people in front of me, and eating with people behind me.

That used to be a big phobia of mine. I got zapped a couple of times as a kid, and I've had dreams of death by electrocution (not in the chair though). Doesn't bother me one bit anymore..

You are not alone, Ed. I'd wager both counts are something to do with growing up in the countryside where you pretty much just go outside and make your own way amongst all the slithery snakes, hairy spiders, smelly rats, tall water towers and small dark holes in the ground. I think when you've swam in slurry you become physically immune to allergies, and when hanging by your feet from a 30 foot oak tree with a hammer and length of rope in your hands it is hard to be scared of heights.

I'm not real keen on heights. As a kid I’d have little trouble getting up; getting down was the problem.

Height - if I drive on the outside lane of a high bridge I have to close my eyes. Standing at the window of a 50+ story building isn't fun. Driving the road to Hana was a noghtmare. Fire - death by, has to be the most horrid thing going.

i thought phobias have to be irrational fear of? most of what's been mentioned here are pretty much reasonable fears to me... i don't think i have a phobia but i was diagnosed to have mild ocd but that's another story... (notice the ellipses at the end of my sentence...) :-)

I think you'd call it a phobia when it interferes with your life. For example a healthy fear of heights is probably a good survival trait but not if it’s so extreme it stops you climbing to safety in an emergency.

That reminds me of an old high school friend. He was terrified of spiders. It was definitely a phobia, because he was a strong guy. He went into the Marines and told us how we ended up getting over it. They often had to camp out in these areas and there were all of these holes in the ground. He found out soon enough that the holes had these big spiders. They would be crawling over him all night.

Fragile looking insects. I'm afraid that if I brush one off a bit too harshly, I'll break its legs or wings unintentionally. Naturally, this extends to spiders, but not because they're creepy, but because I don't want to harm them accidentally... OTOH, flies for some reason, are fair game - they don't even get the opportunity of an open window.

Absolutely. I saw a WWII video on PBS one time where GIs were flushing German soldiers out of the bushes with flame throwers. The Germans would come running out all ablaze. Even in black & white with no sound you could feel their agony.

CPhogia. :-) My phobias...I've gotten over almost all phobias. I used to fear heights until I went rock climbing and that got me over it. I used to fear roller coasters. Now I love them. I guess I have a kind of social phobia; I avoid social situations regularly. :-) I don't like being around a lot of people I don't know, and I have a hard time chit chatting with people I don't know.

I think the thing I tend to be the most afraid of is not being in control. Unfortunately, it is rare I am actually in control. I guess personally I find Peace in my belief that ultimately God is in control. Ben

Yeah pretty much, our solution to cuts etc was to swing the limb around in circles until it stopped bleeding (cleaned the wound at the same time). Still we (my sister and I) were using 2 foot machetes before most kids had used their first pen-knife. Things only get better with age though, coming up to 19 and have access to a Shogun, Suzuki Swift, Nissan Sunny (SORNed but good fun in the fields), Series III Landy (my rebuild project), Tractor, 3 tonne digger, 1/4 tonne ride on mower that'll go through small trees, 4 shotguns, 2 rifles, 1 air rifle (classed as firearm because of power), chainsaws, grinders etc.  And the latest toy: a 4 tonne 4WD power-swivel dumper[^] :-D

Heh, never bothered with ropes

What a phobia, or an allergy.  Some things have frightened me and then I stop and think, why?  Ok it gives you a shock but you understand what's going on and why it frightens most people so why should it frighten you? A few things frighten me but they're not phobias as such, for example people closing shotguns at a shoot when they're not in a stand ready to shoot the clays, I've not witnessed the kinds of accidents that can happen but have been at shoots where things have gone wrong but not around me thank god.

Are you kidding?  But maybe this links back to David's reply to mine, since I was a kid thunderstorms meant sit in the conservatory and hope that the lightning would strike the chicken farm across the valleys so that'd we'd end up with roast chickens flying all over the place :-D

I feel the same way. I'm afraid I'll embarass myself of something.
