VS2005 Standard or Pro

Personally I use Pro because thats what came with my MSDN subscription, however Microsoft provide this[^] handy comparision list of all the different versions :)

Thanks Gavin, Appears as though they have a lot of the same features but have used 2002 Pro and now 2005 Pro and just didn't know what to expect from the Standard edition. Mike

Need a little expert advice. I want to upgrade from VS2002 to VS2005...I been in a cave for awhile. Anyway I recently received the trial version of VS2005 Pro and like it, a little slow on my old machine but impressive features compared to 2002. I will be using this product personally but plan to develop shareware in the future and am on a very limited budget. What are the differences between standard and Pro enough for the added monies? Hi Mike, you haven't said what you are exactly doing with Visual Studio (MFC, C#, ASP, pure C++ or whatever), so perhaps one of the free Express Editions might fit your needs, so that you don't have to spend a cent for the big VS brother: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/windows/. Thanks for responding..guess I didn't, as you stated clarify what I have and enough about what I intend to do with it. I currently have (purchased) VS2002 Pro bought in 2002 and was using C++ but switched over to C# some 3 years ago and love it. I want to upgrade to VS2005 but don't want to sacrifice productivity but am on a limited budget so am considering the Standard edition. Mike

I'd go pro, standard lacks the server explorer features for getting message queues or performance counters. There might be more missing, but that's the one thing I really miss in vs2005 standard.

One CPian posted a comparison on his blog - unfortunately, I don't remember who, and I don't have a link anymore :( (Sorry) Standard is mostly OK for desktop apps, most Pro features center around stuff running against a server. The other thing I noticed: OpenMP is supported only on Pro.

Why don't you try express and see if that will do. If much cheaper cos its free.

So far, I have missed anything :)

Glad to have helped... I got Vista business version by doing something like this. I think its nice that MS gives us ways to get some things for free.
