What to do with free software?

I work for a large computer company and we got a copy of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 professional for taking a 10 minute training. However, I don't need either because of my MSDN subsrciption. I thought about selling them on eBay but I wouldn't get near as much as they retail for. (Ultimate is $400 new at Best Buy and going for about $250 on eBay.) What would you do with the software?

You know you're gonna have friends, family, or neighbors hitting you up for a copy as soon as someone they know gets it. If you hang onto the disc now, you'll at least be able to oblige legally. I also like Chris's and Mike's ideas.

Save it for the next family wedding you have to drive 400 miles to. Then make them your wedding gift and you don't have to buy one.:-D

Donate it to Microsoft so they can resell it... you'll help them to be more powerful and the day Microsoft has full dominion of the world becomes an even larger company, they might have sympathy for you and perhaps they won't enslave you they'll give you discounts. :)

I'd keep it until I found it years later going through the boxes looking for something else at which point I'd laugh and say "I remember this" then take it out back and burn it in a fire for the heck of it or just toss it in the garbage. What you should do is just give it away to someone else or sell it on Ebay, if you can do that then do it, is 100 bucks not significant to you?

I think what your question was, was how to make as much money of off this as possible. I would do one of the following - Install it on a computer, both windows and Office, and write an article on CP, win the monthly C# price and then you will have more software to sell - Try to break it into a billion pieces, add paint, dirt, dead animals and make it into art somehow (I don't really understand art, but that's how it usually works, right? :() - Trade it for a couple of lottery tickets - Go incognito into a software store, and put your copy on the shelves. Wait till someone buys it, and then rob the store afterwards, without any guilt because it did actually belong to you. Let us know how much profit you eventually made. And seeing as how you paid 0$ for it, I'll give you 1$! Thant's more than infinity % profit!

You can give it for some Social Cause. The vendor should have applicable license terms for that. Check with the vendor.

I was just reading the FAQ on a program I learned about here at CP. It's a 'wonderful' tool and the price is right and always has been. In the FAQ the guy is delaying his release of his next version because he's waiting for a copy of Windows Vista. I heard a rumor that you were looking for something to do with yours... If you are interested: So what's the hold up? Well, the development is still far from complete, but another hold up is that I am waiting to get my hands on a copy of Windows Vista. Because this new Microsoft OS is so different from the previous OSes, extensive testing and updating might be required to make TWI work with Vista.
