I find it difficult to believe that anyone can be this...well...stupid. Please, Mister Computerman, what have you done with my 38 million?[^]

“Some have an idea that the reason we in this country discard things so readily is because we have so much. The facts are exactly opposite - the reason we have so much is simply because we discard things so readily. We replace the old in return for something that will serve us better.”--Alfred P. Sloan

Who? The technician or the people that made it so easy to wipe out the backup hard disk as well? IMO, both share equal blame and the stupidity award. Marc

I can't quite work out what they did. Perhaps it was some sort of RAID array, a disk had failed and had to be replaced, and in the management tool, instead of asking it to rebuild from the good disk, he asked it to rebuild from the newly replaced (i.e. blank) one. I didn't think that was possible with most tools, but there's probably some rubbish tool that allows it. Then I suppose it's possible that he tried to restore from backup disk to fix the first cock-up, but again applied the operation the wrong way round.

The article states both 38 million and 38 billion. I guess they aren't sure of the figure yet.

Zeroes are worth nothing anyway, so why even worry about how many?
