Camcorder recommendations?
-
Can anyone recommend a camcorder they've used/owned? We're not looking for something state of the art, but would like to take decent home videos of our kids as they grow up. Is it best to go for one which records onto DVDs? Is there anything else I should be looking out for? Thanks :)

There are differnt options here. shop around for the most convenient and witin price range. Will it be fairly easy to handle? ease of tranferability to DVD media. My first pick would go with Sony , they have a wide variety and fairly good support with a price that is easy on the pocket. Don't go for the fancy schmancy deals.
All things being equal, tommorrow will never equal today

I've got a Panasonic and it records in great quality. Personally I wouldnt get a DVD-corder unless you intend to make DVDs straight from video without editing (and then, would your DVD player even play small DVDs). They seem gimmicky, and it's more of a hassle when editing. For home movies the most important thing to look out for is image stablisation (kids jump around a lot and you dont want to induce motion sickness), and low-light handling (you'll probably shoot indoors a lot). The amount of zoom should be the lowest factor on the list. There's a big comparison of models over at camcorderinfo.com[^]. If you want to splash out then a hard-drive based HD camcorder will take super-quality movies, providing you have the equipment to play it on (or intend to get said equipment). If not then a cheap model will do just fine, and you've not broken the bank over something that you'll want to change in a year or so (when the HD models come down in price)

Thanks, that's a great link! I'm having fun researching, hoping to have our new toy before the Easter weekend.

I can recommend Sony equipment. Try to get one with a hotshoe so you can get powered attachments later if you want. I <3 my IR floodlight. Several models offer quite good still images too.
