The starting point for this was that someone was asked for a color photo and provided a B/W one, on the basis that they are colors. Technically, black at least is not a color. However, it's obvious that we refer to them as colors in every day life. Nevertheless, the core issue was someone being pedantic.

The color of my car is grey, but it didn't matter, it was comfortable and fit my budget. I wear jeans and a hawaiian shirt, and very comfortable shoes Me thinks I am a programmer. ;P

Don't forget that 'darker' is also a factor of how much light is shined on it. The surface of the moon has a lower albedo (measure of how much light is reflected) than coal but because so much sunlight is incident on it still appears relatively bright.
