InnerWorkingsssssss is full of s

I've installed an InnerWorkings tutorial from a CP link (with that nice advertisement of learning a new skill for the new year) and what I've got is a virusBurst-like trojan masquerading as uninstall.exe of course, that means I need to manually uninstall the product else I've had the 'uninstall trojan' executed. freebies is like a box of s, you don't know what you gonna get. :wtf:

Have you considered a false positive? I know that, for example, the NSIS uninstaller is sometimes erroneously flagged as virus.
i don't know. the fact that it is installing something without user notification or my consent is misleading and terribly wrong. the folks from the Innerworkings must have some answer for that.:sigh:

Send me a link and let me check it out. If you're blaming InnerWorkings for something that is not their fault then that's not fair. If InnerWorkings aren't being above-board then they should have a chance to respond. Either way, let's take a look...

Hi, This is Brian Finnerty from InnerWorkings responding to your posting. We have received a few reports of Symantec flagging our software install and uninstall EXEs with a false positive today. It's very likely that Symantec updated their virus checking policies over the weekend, but we're working directly with them to isolate the issue that's causing this recent flag. Apologies for the scare, but I can assure everybody that our software is secure (no trojans!) and this is a simple flagging issue. If anyone else has encountered similar security messages with our install (from Symantec or other anti-virus products), please contact me at bfinnerty@innerworkings.com so that we can get to the bottom of it. We're working on it - thanks for your patience! All the best,

The issue of false positives is a frustrating one. We had an article submitted a few weeks ago that included an installer that my virus checker (Avast) continually flagged as a virus. He included full source code and there clearly was no virus in the code or the exe, but some magical string of bytes sent Avast into a frenzy. I can't think of anything more depressing than having something like Symantec falsely tell everyone your product is infected :(

You're welcome - apologies again for stressing you out! Quick update on the virus flag issue this morning - Symantec has confirmed that both files (iw_setup.exe and uninstall.exe) have been investigated and are clean of any viral infection. Detection of these files was the result of a false positive, so that's the official "all clear". :-D We're working with Symantec on timing for the release of a revised update (they did say “immediately”). I can feel a blog coming on about this whole experience... Thanks to everyone for your patience while we figured this issue out - particular thanks to Chris Maunder for his balanced comments and DaTxomin for his astute detective work in predicting the underlying problem. All the best,
