Eregon - the movie
-
Just rented this the other day by default since the movies we wanted were all out at the local video store. (Why we can't just get any movie ever filmed on demand in this day and age is still a mystery to me.) I sort of expected it to be crappy, but when I saw Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich at the start I perked up considerably as I hadn't realized these guys (who are both first class actors) were in the movie. There seemed to be a big budget at work good special effects, good actors, unfortunately they seem to have attempted to tell a story in movie form that would have been the subject of a 3 book fantasy novel series. If you carefully watch the movie and note time passing (i.e. day, night) you will get the impression that about 4 or 5 days of actual time have passed in the movie from the start to the end, however the story line itself requires that months and years have gone by. It was very badly edited or maybe just badly scripted so that the movie appears to jump forward in time out of the blue with no continuity between. It's like watching a 6 hour movie but randomly hitting a skip forward button so you see it in 2 hours. It's a real shame, they could have had something good there, but in the end you feel like you watched the story board outline of the movie and not the movie itself. It was just way too distracting to really enjoy any part of the movie. A good movie like a good book should draw you in to the exclusion of the real world from start to finish, this movie abruptly made you stop and think "hey, how did that guy ride the length of the kingdom in a few hours" etc. In a better movie they would probably have broken it into two halves with the first half dealing with the setup to the big finale and a seque in between showing a lot of time passing. This movie just randomly jumped through the story from start to finish devoting no particular amount of time for any purpose to any part of the story arc. I don't recommend it.

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch because on the posters the "leading man" looks prettier than the leading woman.

Yeah the Book is a lot better the movie. And the movie only covers book one of the 3 books. And only books one and two are out the third book isn't even finished yet.:sigh:
Ohh did I just say that?

Huh, I didn't even know it was a book, that explains a lot though, I can imagine if it was a book that I had read I'd absolutely hate the movie.
God knows

I am a big fan of the book--I've read it a couple times. I figured it would be a disappointment just as the Harry Potter movies are never as good as the books. But I was REALLY disappointed with the movie. A lot of cool characters are not seen. I really recommend reading the first book. I'm almost done with the second; not as exciting as the first thus far but interesting.

Thanks for the tip. I saw the movie the other day, and did kind of notice 'how fast those horses must go', but enjoyed it nonetheless. I will have to read the book(s), seeing as y'all say it is much better than the movie.

The author was only 19 at the time the book was published. So I'd expect it to be a bit rough around the edges. Christopher Paolini[^]
