In Nine months we'll have a self confessed terrorost running free around our country David Hicks gets 9 months[^] You dont have to be a cinical person to question the timing of this
Java IS a platform so it is not platform independence, remember that. Your program runs on a platform regardless of what you think or what people say. With Java you are not running on different platforms, you are running on a platform that sits on top of other platforms, and remember the .NET platform sits on top of platforms other than Windows. - CSS on JAVA

If you had a choice between confessing to terrorism and getting out in 9 months or not confessing and staying in prison for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Yes it's good news for Hicks and for Howard. I do think your message is to subtle for the non-Australian readers here. I live in Adelaide and after reading today’s newspaper, I feel that there is a lot of empathy for Hicks in his home town. People here just don't believe the so called intelligence reports which claim him to be the number one westerner in the al-Qaida organization. It is a bit like believing in the “Iraq has WMD” lies. He did confess to providing material support to a terrorist organization, which is very honest of him, after all, the American CIA supported Osama bin Laden and look at all the terrible trouble they got into!!!

To be fair, and this is something I think people generally miss, the guy is going to be out in 9 MORE months....he's already had 5 years imprisonment. That sentence for the crimes of "Meeting OBL" and "a friend thinking he had something to do with 911" seems pretty excessive, but the "providing material support to..." is obviously more serious. To my mind, this guy didn't kill anyone, and although he is a terrorist, he didn't ACTUALLY commit any terrorist acts. So perhaps a second chance is appropriate? And I personally think 5 1/2 years for essentially conspiracy charges is about right.....

He was in the pay of a hostile foreign power and prepared to fight against his own nations soldiers. 50 years ago he would have faced a firing squad 2 weeks after his capture without anyone batting an eyelid. I'm sure he will become a regular figure at 'peace' rallies all over Australia over the next few years. After all, he only wanted to kill American, British, Indian and Australian soldiers in a legitimate struggle against imperial aggression right?
