Are you a coder or a developer? Do you enjoy the design components of devlopment best or the coding aspects best? Do you think employers know the difference?

I think I like the "innovation" part of programming the best, so I guess that makes me a developer. I've got a constrant stream of ideas as far as ways to make things easier on the user end which I think is really important when you've got a gaggle of people in the market place looking for the most no-nonsense way to get something done. It's important to keep that in mind when your coding. I don't like the idea of being a "grunt" and working of someones already developed technology. better to develop your own and make it better than to replicate me thinks. Can you imagine Darth Maul on speed?

      1. Developer 2. Yes Tim Smith I know what you're thinking punk, you're thinking did he spell check this document? Well, to tell you the truth I kinda forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this here's CodeProject, the most powerful forums in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question, Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?

I like both :) I like programming, and if something helps me with it, I'm happy, but usually trying to understand what component do and how it implemented, although using them and not writing again. Coder and developer is a bit hard to make difference between them. Are you coder? So why you don't want to write your own Visual Studio and using existing one? :) Are you developer? So why are you writing all those boring lines of code instead of developing user interface in Visio and letting someone else to write code for you? I think this is all same :) We are programmers... hehe Philip Patrick Web-site: www.stpworks.com "Two beer or not two beer?" Shakesbeer Need Web-based database administrator? You already have it!

I consider myself a developer as coding is only a small part of what I do. A lot of my previous employers never understood the software development wasn't just sitting infront of a keyboard typing. Michael :-)

            1. Developer when there's something to develop, otherwise just a coder 2) yes, but not by this name.

I like both also, but I think in the future (3-7 years out) I will strongly prefer the non-coding aspects best. I am fortunante that my boss appreciates what development is. However, it seems that many employers don't have a clue.

I'd say I'm both. I'll probably be doing more developing and designing in the immediate future, though, as our team dives into a major re-design of our code. Sometimes being a coder gets in the way of being a developer, though. Often when I start a small project, I know that I should do a good job designing it first, but it's more fun to just dive in and start hacking away. :-D No generalization is 100% true. Not even this one.

I am deffinatly a Coder !!! I spend almost 95% of my time programming. Even if I have to develop a really huge algorithm, I still develop it while coding. Just put it in a small test program and make it bigger, better, faster, ... And YES, my employer knows the difference... I think I'm one of the lucky ones...

Both. I like designing and coding, but best of all prototyping - building things that people don't have a need for until I put it in front of them as a prototype and then can't do without.

I enjoy designing a system, solving problems ready for implementing, designing user interfaces, and obviously coding. So I guess this makes me a developer and not just a coder. Simon I need your clothes, your boots, and your copy of VS.NET. Sonork ID 100.10024
