I have a Dell D620. If you want to setup the pointing stick, go to Mouse Properties in the Control Panel. Under the Device Select tab you can disable the pointing stick completely. Under the Stick tab you can disable the click.

Many many thanks!!!!! The real funny thing is that I was looking at the mouse settings for the computer that I was remoting into before and not the laptop. Who would want to use the nub for clicking anyway? Thanks again!

Glad I could help. I never use the stick but there must have been at least 1 person at Dell that thought it was a good idea.

There are some people who use them, the TP is more intuitive to use, but with practice the stick can give much finer degrees of control. It's not just Dell, some HP and IBM models also offer them, but it is largely limited to business models whose users are more likely to've learned the stick in the pre-touchpad days when all the other control options were even harder to use.

Have any of you ever run accross a laptop nub/pointing stick/TrackPoint that you can actually use to click and double click? I just got a new Dell Latitude D620 that has this crappy feature. When I'm writing code and I hit a key near the stupid nub my cursor often moves to the place where the mouse pointer is at. I'm trying to figure out how to turn the click feature off but havn't seen anything on google. PLEASE HELP!!!! Jerry

I know you have a solution now, but another effective method is to remove the TP with a pair of long nosed pliers.

I really like the nub. It's much better than the touchpad IMO, but I would never want to use the nub to click! It's not really intuitive what mode you are in when you click using the nub. I tried to figure it out for a few minutes.

Yup. I'm using one right now. Rarely use the nub, but sometimes it's nice not to take my hands off the keyboard. Of course, it's small enough that i'd have to somehow hit my finger directly between the G, H, and B keys to cause harm - so i just leave it enabled.

I like the nub a lot. I just don't want to use it to click? The first thing I did was turn off the touchpad.

There should be a "Tap off when typing" option on the Stick page of the Mouse control panel, along with a configurable delay for re-enabling tapping after the last keypress. Make sure this is checked - for both the stick and the touchpad. It'll save you a lot of headaches... no more accidentally switching focus while typing.
