Job title? Vote please

I was thinking the other day that when talking to other members or reading posts I have no idea what everyone actually does. Would it be interesting to have an optional job title and company associated with your profile? I was just thinking it would be cool to see what companies everyone's posting from and what they actually (officially) did during their day. Who's a student? Who's an architect? Who are the hardworking, intelligent and extremely good looking site administrators? Vote: 1 = bad idea, 5 = good idea for Job title to be added. Company name is, I realise, a little more tricky since many companies don't want their employees' posts associated with their company.

It would seem that the idea is being well-received, Chris. Go for it! For the record, my title is Utility Systems Support Specialist, whatever that means. They made it up on the spot when they hired me. What it seems to boil down to is, I do anything that no one else has the time or knowledge to do. I can live with that, but it does tend to make the old resume rather tedious to read. And it doesn't fit on a business card...:sigh:

That's me. I'm the CEO, VP, MVP, VPIT, Secretary, Janitor, Scapegoat, Etc... I do it all man! Not sure what my title would be other than... crazy. If that's the case then I'm on a Crazy Train and I wanna Bark at the Moon. I'm okay with that as I know CG will most certainly join me in either of those past times.:-D Do you know how many times I've had to fire myself or just quit? My boss pisses me off all the time and I quit on him all the time. The jerk that he is but no matter how hard I try I cannot get away from the guy it's like he follows me around or something.;)
The best title I ever heard was CEICODS - belonged to a friend of mine whose parents bought a restaurant for her to run, then wouldn't let her run it. They ran it into the ground, instead. She referred to herself as the Chief Executive in Charge Of Diddley-Squat. I rather like it...:-D

Until 1995 I was a senior programmer with a major trainsportation company doing projects that many would kill for. But life took a twist and at present have my own Home Improvement company and am trying to cram my head with 12 years worth of missed technology and get back into the IT field as an entry level programmer. I'd actually think you should have a text field for a paragraph description of your job/work, instead of just job title (although I think that's a good idea too). I hang out in academic science circles on occasion, and there are constantly plenty of science mixers, teas, receptions, lunches, and the like happening all the time, at which everyone always has their 30 second stump speech at the ready. I always joke that it reminds me of dogs meeting one another, sniffing each others butts, but it actually is a pretty good system. It really does work in terms of networking and quickly gravitating towards where you need to be in a motley crew of researchers. Basically, I think it's a great idea, and you should have all three: job title, company, and job description.

I think it is probably a good idea, at least the description part. My company title was ‘Software Engineer’, but I consider myself a JOAT programmer. If the company needed it or I needed it to develop or complete a project, then I created it, if it did not already exist or the company would not pay for it. Note the signature INTP, creating new things, experimenting with ideas, and just building something in order to learn from it, is what we do. Basically, we think too much for our own good and good is never good enough to completely satisfy us.

An excellent Idea, I think, contary to common belief I do, occasionally, Think that is, usually gets me in to trouble though. My Job Title? Officially "carer" also refered to as "Waste Of Space", "Village Idiot", "Chicken With out a Chimney" (cluckin flueless)and various other titles. Company, "Walsall Gadgets Inc." WE are a very small company, (total workforce 1, part time)we dont very much but we do it well. Woz_a EXPERT: EX = has been, Spurt = a Drip under pressure.

On starting my current job I had the privilege(?) of actually being able to specify my own job title. Eager to impress my new Quebecois colleagues with my quirky Yorkshire sense of humour I carefully chose 'Machine Accuracy Development Manager' and sat back and waited for the remarks. Two years later - not one comment, either they're being very polite or they just don't have a sense of humour, but after two years here I'm leaning towards the latter... Steve McVey (M.A.D. Man.)

I run this place but do everything under the sun. I think the more general the title the better like Programmer, rather than something that would be more acurate like "Redundant Loop Eliminator", "Code Cleaner", "Code Mechanic", "Crash Test Dummy", "Null Operation Installer", "Bug Killer", "The F.B.I (Fast But Inaccurate)", "MS Bug Finder", "Client Whipping Boy", "Code Tuner", "Traveler of the Vortex of Death (Finding help on the msdn site)", "Code Flusher", "Version Queen(King)", and everyones favorite... I am the "Systems Engineer" (my choice) of this company: www.exitplanningforadvisors.com[^] I created that site, with some design and graphics help from two interns. It's not my best work, but the back-end functionality is super-cool. It has a sales pipeline and contact manager for our clients. We can do automated print and email marketing campaigns with it. It also has an event manager for our clients, so they can schedule meetings and use the automated marketing to promote those. We have a PHPBB forum with a nifty auto-login from the ASPX side of the site. We also send out two newsletters every month, one is from us to our clients, and the other is from our clients to their clients, and is re-branded for their various companies. In addition, we have a method of dealing with various versions of our site pages and associated documents (word files, powerpoints, etc), which allows us to serve up "compliant" versions of documents to people from various companies. That is done with an HttpHandler, and was quite tricky to do, so if you're having trouble with HttpHandlers, let me know and I'll help. Yes, the tutorial is wrong. I am also working on a Windows application for the Mortgage refinancing industry... it will go out to about 900 dealers next month, so wish me luck on that! That's my private project, but my company supports me on that if I have to have a meeting or something in the working day. Our company lawyer also helped me with the contracts required for that project, and free-of-charge lawyering is well... unheard of. If you are a developer with any ASP.Net experience and you live in Denver... I need you! Contact me please! This is a good company to work for, and you get the added bonus of working with me, heheheee :)

Personally I vote a 4 on this subject, as I think that it is a good idea. And as others have stated, if you want to ommit this info then by all means go ahead, it should be up to each individual. As for myself I am an owner of a custom system building company, where I am also the one wearing all the other hats too. It can and does get crazy sometimes. :confused: However, I have to say that I have listend and learned quite a bit of very useful information here. :-D
