I need to modify the HOSTS file in my Vista 64-bit system, but the file is not in the usual location C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. There is no etc directory at all. I searched the whole C:\Windows folder, and found a HOSTS file but it's locked and it's inside a folder that seems to be a backup or something. I also checked the hidden folders and files with no success. Searching with Google didn't provide any help. All the links I've found always display the usual location for the file. This is very odd because I used to edit the HOSTS file quite often in XP. Any clue? EDIT: The file actually is there, but somehow it is not visible in Windows Explorer. I had open a command prompt (as Administrator), copy the file somewhere, edit it, then re-copy it in place (because Notepad refuses to save it directly in the etc folder). -- modified at 7:51 Wednesday 11th April, 2007

Your right that it should be under C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts but it doesn't appear to exist on my copy either, although it is there on Windows 2003 Server x64 and Vista x64. Have you tried creating it and seeing if Windows it picks it up?

I cannot create the etc folder. Both from the context menu and from the Organize toolbar button, if I click on "New Folder", nothing happens.:~

I see you have already found it but if you need to change it again. Run notepad as administrator to make the editing a little easier. :)

That sounds strange, i can browse to it, open, edit, save without problems. ( When i run notepad as administrator that is. )
