Information overload.

I have many websites, news articles, wiki articles, forums, other things I attempt to read daily. It seems that I am bombarded with information and I want to take it all in. There is just sooo much I want to read and do on my computer but it consumes most of my time in the day. I cant stand not being connected to the internet so I bring my laptop with me when I go places and attempt to find wireless networks so I can stay connected and informed. I wish there was something that would allow me to absorb all the information I want in a short amount of time. How do you guys manage to take in your daily dose of information and communication?

i think that you shouldn't sweat things because you will need/get it in its own time. that's my slant as i seem to be a bit of a procrastinator, but feel fairly grounded.

But I want to know what AMDs future processors are going to be and what advancements they will have. I want to know when Windows "Seven" goes into alpha. I want to know if a single WD Raptor is faster than 2 WD Caviars in RAID0. I want to know how far along solid state hard-drives are coming. :sigh:

Why do you want, or need, to know all that semi-useless information? It's a pertinent question you ask as I've spent the past couple of weeks consciously trying to cut out the spam, both paper-based & virtual. I send mailshot letters back asking to be removed from the lists & I bin the semi-useless information included with my statements & I have unsubscribed from many e-newsletters. It's quite liberating to only get emails from friends, but also to know that the vast well of knowledge is available to me when I require it to target something specific.

Hmm? Sorry, did you say something?

I have the same problem... but I think it's possible to take in all the stuff you want. The tactic I've tried using lately is to state my goals for the day (eg: do 30 mins piano, implement epsilon-greedy action selection instead of pure greedy (1h), read article xyz) and pick the most important one (or the one with the shortest estimated completion time) and do it at the earliest opportunity. Simple, but it seems to work so far!

I get some of my favorite e-newsletters daily and weekly. Over time I unsubscribe to the ones that don't make the grade. Every morning I peruse the interesting articles along with my email before starting my assignments. My employer benefits from my continual self-education at a minimal cost. Every time I use the web for a task I am working on, I never feel guilty for being side tracked by some other technical article I come across. Some I know will come in handy in the future, so I save them. Other's I print out, and take home with me to read when I am not busy. Develop your own strategy, practice it until it becomes a habit. Eventually, you won't realize that you have developed your own information management system. Peace, David

Don't let people discourage you from expanding your knowledge in whatever area interests you. While some information may seem useless to others, you know you'll use it eventually. Let your curiosity feed your mind. One thing I found (which drives me crazy because there's soooo much great stuff I want to read) is a feature Google offers if you have an account. You can set up pages with feeds on topics you are interested in. I frequently look at the headlines on the tab pages I've set up and learn new stuff all the time. It is dangerous though, I've started some mornings on weekends just taking a peek at this stuff while having my coffee then find myself many hours later still exploring the things I've learned about.
