Hi.. Is it a good idea that software developers involve in Gym activities in the evning and do that hard stuff with dumbells. Its a saying in India that those "pahelwans" i.e. Strong Gym people have reduced intelligence due to that hard excercise. wont it be tiring next day. What do you think. naga

No, just drink lots of caffeine. It will stimulate your heart and make you shaky (which burns calories), thats quite enough activity for me.:-D

Incorrect. Strong gym people have reduced intelligence due to the drugs. Exercise is actually quite good for your brain. Just make sure you eat right.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Exercise, including resistance training (weight-lifting) stimulates and improves all parts of the body, especially the brain. Dumb people who spend all day in the gym get the reputation for being dumb because they are, and that's all they can excel at doing. The exercise didn't make them that way. That's just the hand they were dealt in life. Developers are a sedentary lot, on the whole, and such a lifestyle leads to a host of problems, including diminished mental capacity due to poor circulation, heart disease, low oxygenation, etc. A decent balance of regular exercise and mentally stimulating activity is a healthy choice, and one which will optimize your physical and mental abilities. A regular routine of weight training a couple times a week will not make you tired - it will give you more energy, rather than less. Mix it up with nights of cardio and aerobic exercises and you'll keep it interesting, as well as adding even more benefits. As for their peculiar personality quirks, exercise is probably not going to help developers much. But it won't hurt, either.;)

As others have stated on this thread, exercise is good for you in many ways. Yes during an initial period of time (each person reacts differently) of exercising regularly, you may feel more tired, but that is just your body adjusting to the change in tempo. After three months or so of exercising you may realize that you are feeling better throughout the day. At the very least, those were my experiences. Oh, and getting off the caffeine helped as well. There is a lot of misconception about weight training. I have seen many developers avoid it in favour of cardio routines like treadmills, elliptical trainers, exercycles etc. I agree with Shog. As long as you stay off weight gainers, creatine, etc - it should be ok. Some weight trainers are always thinking about their next gym session, that might affect their concentration levels on other things. Since, there are many such people around, it seems to reinforce the stereotype. Equipment named dumb bells and dead weights dont help either.

The people who say that, are looking for an excuse for not exercising. I'm not exactly fit right now ( although I have a home gym and I'm working on it ), but physical fitness increases your mental alertness.

Sheer stupidity. Just like your mind, you have to exercise your body. When you do exercise consistently you find your mind is sharper and you feel better.

Hey, take two dumbells. Start two threads with different priorities in your mind... 1 to count the number of rounds done with one hand and another for the other. 1..1...2,3..2...4...3... and never loose the count. This way you can excercise both your mind & body:-O* *Dumbells would fall on your feet in case of a Race condition :-D

Weight gainers: you need to know what kind of ingredients are used. If the ingredients are natural and has no anabolic drugs in it, then it is safe to use. Creatine: Is safe if you know how to use it. It is not an anabolic drug. Again while using any such thing, you need to combine it with a sensible diet and physical workout.

Hi.. Is it a good idea that software developers involve in Gym activities in the evning and do that hard stuff with dumbells. Its a saying in India that those "pahelwans" i.e. Strong Gym people have reduced intelligence due to that hard excercise. wont it be tiring next day. What do you think. naga

Let's use an analogy. If your brain is the CPU, your heart the power supply, and your body the case, wouldn't you upgrade the power supply and case when you upgraded the CPU? Exercise is how you upgrade your body. One nice thing is, when you do so, the brain upgrade comes along as part of the package.

For your average Joe just trying to get some decent exercise in any of those supplements are a huge waste of money.
