Convert DVD to MPG ???

I have a question - why don't I have any audio in my file ?

I know this has been asked before, but none of the responses I can find, help. I want to convert a couple of DVDs to MPG, for my portable media player. I can buy them both as mpeg from Amazon for $30, so I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on a converter. The cheapest one I've found that doesn't have audio sync problems, is $35. All the ones I've downloaded that claim to be free, rip up to 5 min and cost > $60. What do other people use ? Note: I don't want to copy VOB files, I want to create an MPG or WMV.

Handbrake[^] is pretty freaking awesome. It's what I use to rip DVDs to iPod format. But I bet you it'll rip 'em to normal MPEG as well. If not, then I'd use VLC[^], cause VLC will definitely rip to WMV for Zune[^]. If you care about quality, though, I'd use Handbrake, seeing as how it's a two-pass converter (or can be, if you tell it to) and VLC is one-pass.
We are certainly uncertain at least I'm pretty sure I am...

You probably need to install the AC3 Filter to get the audio out of the VOBs. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=66022&package_id=63808[^]
Found on Bash.org [erno] hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

Have you tried using VLC to convert videos? I've tried maybe a dozen times over the years, and not one single time has VLC produced a working video. :| I just tried the command line on the WMV for Zune page, and the Zune software chokes on the resulting video and says it can't convert it.

You don't need to buy any software to do this. All the following are free. DVDDecrypter to rip the VOBs from the DVD. ProjectX to demux the VOB files. Imago MPEG Muxer to remux the files to MPEG2. They can all be found at videohelp.com.

When you successfully decrypt the DVDs you can use Super Video Converter[^] to convert the VOB files to any format that you so choose so that it is compatible with your media player.

I Use Magic DVD Ripper. www.magicdvdripper.com It cost $35.00, but the demo will rip the entire disk, You get a limited number of times to run the program, so don't close the program until you have completed all your disks. It also rips portions of the dvd if you just want to capture a certain part. Skip

I had too much time on my hands last weekend in Arizona. So, I came up with this... I used a DVD Ripper program, DVDDecrypter-3.1.4.0.exe, and I ripped a DVD to my laptop. The DVD was a music DVD that ripped out 4 ea. 1,048,572KB files. I just renamed the file extension from .VOB to .mpeg. Now windows media player will play the file. I then hooked up my Windows Mobile 5.0 phone and used the Windows Media Player 10 on my laptop to sync to my 8525 cingular phone. I have a 1G memory stick in my phone. Each 1,048,572KB file crunched down to about 48MB on the phone. So, a whole DVD is about 190MB total. I've been watching my Pink Floyd DVD on my phone for over a week now. I'm sure you can do this with other DVD's. Is it perect? Not really, but I'm watching video on my phone for free :). I got even better results by putting the phone in "flight mode" and turning off/on the phone. Then, I didn't have any skips and the video didn't get out of sync.
