At least one success for them in the last couple of month. As a Microsoft fan aren't you delighted? They can bring partners to sign patent agreements without having publicized any patent violation. That's great! The best bluff since Windows 95.

im not sure why they are doing this ... when it was just one linux vendor you could say they were going to build good links with this distro and add good interop and push it as their chosen open source solution now im not so sure what the plan is if i was really naive and trusting i would say maybe they are protecting linux from bad people by taking them under their wing and acting like a big brother of course i dont think thats the case but i fail to see what benefits ms gets from this strategy so i wont pass judgement until it becomes clear it is odd tho ... maybe they're just using some of their cashpile to f**k with the open source people's heads

According to the article; "that includes a controversial provision granting the Korean electronics conglomerate rights to patents that Microsoft claims have been illegally borrowed by the Linux operating system." According to that statement the Linux operating system illegally borrow the patents? I thought you illegally borrow the technology but the patent holder retains possession of the patent! Questionable article wording aside, let me see if I understand this, they are giving away patent rights to technology that they claim Linux "illegally borrowed". Am I to believe that if they had legitimate claims that their patents had been infringed upon they wouldn't have already litigated this matter! :~ Sounds like their claims are not grounded or they would be protecting their patents right now. I suppose it doesn't hurt to give Samsung rights to patents that are not legitimate and therefore not enforceable. X| When you hold a bunch of frivolous patents it really doesn't cost you anything to give them away in contract negotiations because you are not going to be able to enforce them anyway.

Honestly I believe they are working hard to maintain some competition against themselves to avoid future hassles with anticompetitive crusaders. The next time there is a hearing somewhere calling them to task for being anti-competitive they can point to it and say "actually you're wrong". It's the price of success that they have come to decide is worth paying.
