All polls are flawed. The wording of the question is an easy way to control the result. It could well have been: which do you think is more possible in 2007, the second coming of Jesus, or Bill Gates going bankrupt ?

If you look at the article (or others reporting the same poll), then it is very unlikely that the question was anywhere near that bad. Respondents were apparently given a list of events (terrorist attack, war with Iran etc.) and asked if they expected them to happen. There are percentages for all of those events.

The wording of the question would necessarily need to be very precise though to capture that distinction, especially in a population which is probably not all that well educated on the finer details of probability statistics.

Frankly, since I'm an atheist and don't really expect the second coming anytime soon (and since presumably if *anyone* comes down out of the clouds I'm in trouble), I'm pulling for Shiva to show up (my apologies if I am misrepresenting the cosmological cycle in Hinduism, I probably am). Imagine it -- you walk outside, enjoying a nice spring day, la la la. Suddenly, a rift is cut in the fabric of space and time, and with her necklace of skulls and human entrails, Shiva pops out just in time to end the world. I think the expressions on the entire population of the US, expecting a white man (Jesus was white doncha know?) and instead getting a woman of color, would almost make the whole thing worthwhile.

Not at all. CG's scenario involved the relative likelihood of two events. There is no indication that the poll involved this. Each event was considered independently.

1. It's Vishnu who's supposed to take up avatars, not Shiv. 2. They are both males. 3. Vishnu is depicted with fair skin (he is primarily an Aryan God, after all) 4. The avatars are benign; Vishnu is supposed to come to Earth to save it, not put an end to it.

byalmightybobUg. Apologies for messing that up. This is actually one of my problems with wikipedia: there isn't typically a good overview of different religions. This would be the second time (Buddhism the first) that wikipedia has more or less overwhelmed me with details, and failed to provide a good, relatively simple overview. So my mistake about Vishnu (although wikipedia did do some "maybe Kali=Vishnu, maybe she doesn't" obfuscation on me). About the "destruction" though. My understanding was that Vishnu is constantly destroying the world (once every time Brahman sleeps), and which is then constantly rebuilt (every time Brahman wakes). So my understanding is that it's in no way a negative thing, and is just a natural part of the way the world works (more like going to sleep/waking up than destruction/creation). Is this even close to right, or has wikipedia done it to me again? Is it even Shiva who is the active force of the destruction, or is it Kali, acting on behalf of Shiva? I'm so confused!!! :-D

Nope there is a group of nuns (in England maybe) that took out insurance to pay for his childhood so he won't be a homeless vagabond wandering the streets speaking in crazy parables. Although, if he was, how would we know?

'k... I've participated in these sorts of polls before, and gotta say - when you're giving me a list of something and asking me to rate each one, i rank them relative to each other. At least after the first couple of items. I mean, how could i not? That said, maybe i'm just a freak and most people do answer with no memory of or comparison to what they answered for previous items. :shrug:
