Has anybody here used Ironspeed, the code generating tool? If so what are your views?

    Kind Regards, Gary

I've used v1.6, v1.7 and v2.0 on a few projects. It was very good for creating quick web sites if they did not require much customization. Another nice feature is that it was open source. In my opinion, these versions were somewhat buggy and would tend to cause undesireable effects without you realizing it - unless you went through all pages and reviewed them for issues. A couple examples pertained to the menu tabs, display data, and security... Menus: When having more than one set of menu tabs the site would usually build correctly but sometimes would corrupt the desired menu link causing the wrong menu tab to be displayed or no tabs at all. Display data: Usually you want to display a table foreign key data by it's name or description and not by its ID #. This was easy to do, but many times the display would "magically" go back to displaying the ID # instead of name - and this was on screens that I was not even revising. So many times I would have to go through all screens to confirm that no FK references "broke" and haved to rebuild to fix the the issue, and then hope no other page would "break". Security - similar to menus and FK display. The security "links" or reference to user tables would just "break" or disappear. These are a few examples, but these, and others, occurred often. So often, that it was extremely frustrating and I have refused to use in the past 2 or 3 years. However, since it has been that long maybe drastic improvements have occurred. Finally, when it came to technical support, I was not very satisfied... Although it did make creating data entry, edit, delete and show pages quickly and easily, it was just to buggy for me. This is all just my opinion, but I will not use it again... Chris

Here comes my two cents. I'm going to have to tell you that I think Iron Speed is a great product and they now offer a free version that will work on up to 15 tables. I'm an Iron Speed MVP (no that doesn't mean I work for them and in fact I don't really get any unearned compensation from them). There is so much that has happened to the product since the cykophysh39 used it that it's boggling to try and explain. I normally charge $85 to provide a 1 hour tour by GoToMeeting[^] of the product but in your case I'd be more than happy to give you a 1 hour review at no charge whatsoever. If you buy the product guess what I get? Absolutely nothing ... except the feeling that I hopefully lead you to purchase a tool that should increase your productivity a lot. I'm more than willing to answer any question you might have on this product and will stand behind it 100%. Remember... I get nothing out of my offer to you. I'm putting that offer on the table strictly for your benefit and I truly believe the benefit is all yours. I'm going to be blogging on Iron Speed at my blog moving forward please see http://blog.code-frog.com[^] - Rex Winn Iron Speed MVP[^]

Thanks guys on your feedback, We are looking at the product, to generate all the crud code to quickly deliver an estate agency management application. In trials so far I have been quite impressed, we can create the bones of the application in a matter of seconds, as we have the Database design done. However we have one concern obviously being the price adn licence. Thanks code-frog for your offer, we'll be looking into the product a bit more over the next couple of days, so we may get in touch with you.

          Kind Regards, Gary

Gary, I would agree with Code Frog. Of course, I also am an Iron Speed MVP. I can identify with your frustration while the product was going through growing pains; I experienced frustrations in those earlier versions myself. However, I have found that version 3.x was better than 1.x and 2.x by a good stride. 4.x is a dream. The code model was changed over previous versions and now it is much more organized and FAR easier to figure out how/where to make those code customizations. The stability of the product has increased a ton since 1.x and 2.x versions and Iron Speed's track record of releases in the 4.x range has been far more solid than ever before. Version 1.x was released in 2003 and 2.x in 2004 - that's three to four years ago. And a lot has changed in the last several years as the product matured. So by all means, if you haven't used the tool in a while, try it again with an open mind and without the luggage from the past and I'm sure you will be very pleased. And for your 'major' customized screens (if you have any), you COULD use GridView's, DataSets, DataAdaptors and the works - added to an 'empty' Iron Speed page if you really have some crazy requirements. I find that I only do this about 1% of the time. And with the [new] ease of integrating 3rd party controls (like Telerik or Infragistics, etc.) you can make your Iron Speed app really sing. Thanks, Jim
