My big problem with AMEX is this : I have an AMEX card, and I get double points for using it. Very few people take AMEX ( even in the US, I have found ), and those that do, usually charge a surcharge. This means that I have to work out what the points are worth, and if it's worth paying the surcharge. On the other hand, I spent $15k or something on my card last year and got a $50 dept store voucher, so, probably the answer is that it's not worth it. The surcharge on the flights I'll buy today would be $50.

My big love for AMEX is this: I have an AMEX card and have been in the points program less than a year. Almost every company I deal with takes AMEX. I spend about $30K monthly with AMEX. So far I have gotten a new computer and 20" monitor, a laser printer, and a bunch of other goodies. The points equal 1% of the cash value of monthly spending and add up quickly. Right now I'm saving points for a 42" LCD TV, and later this year I'll get some new office furniture.

You could have done this : Start an account with them, deposit the TCs, get all the money out immediately, and close the account.

Yes, I would have done that if I failed.. But in theory traveler's check (should) accept every where.. except this bloody bank..

Unfortunately they have a plan for that. Initial deposits to open an account aren't usually available immediately, unless they are in cash. If they are in the form of a check or other kind of draft, the check must clear before the deposit is available for withdrawal.

I just went to change my traveler’s check from a bank here in Charlotte/ North Carolina/ USA. Huh,, they say that I need to have an account in the bank to change my TCs.. What?? I argued for couple of seconds and also talked to bank manager but all in vain, if I am having an account here in that bank, how come I be a traveler?.. I was lucky to get them changed from the second bank I went, which was a reputed much bigger one.. Has anyone else faced this kind of a thing before??

I would complain to AMEX about the experience you had with that bank. Who knows AMEX just maybe, might, possible, could, potentially follow up with that bank to see what their issue is. About Travelers Cheques [^]

American Express: How do I cash Travelers Cheques?:

To cash a Travelers Cheque, date it in the upper right-hand corner (just like a personal check), and fill out the "pay to the order" line (or have the cashier do it). Then countersign the Cheque in the lower left-hand corner. Make sure the cashier watches as you sign so your signature can be verified. If you encounter difficulties in cashing a Cheque in the U.S., encourage the cashier or merchant to call American Express for instructions at 1-800-525-7641. Outside the U.S., the merchant can call an American Express Travelers Cheque Customer Service Center. For details, click the first letter of the country in which you need assistance:

Wow! Charlotte... some years ago I was here for business and then I discover that in the USA you have the traffic semaphores in the other side of the crossroad than where we have them in Europe. After a lot of hours of travelling and some of driving a hired car in the motorway..., you can imagine the face of the guy that was at 2:00 o'clock (by night) correctly stopped in a crossroad when I turned left and suddenly I saw a red light... You should have seen his face... I've just remembered that... good luck with the bank... :rose:

You think that's bad? The local bank here in town won't even cash checks drawn from accounts at that bank. That's right - you can take a check, written against a Pueblo Bank & Trust account, into the main office of Pueblo Bank & Trust, and they will refuse to cash it. You can then take it across the street to US Bank and cash it. The sort of stupidity that just makes your jaw drop.

depending on your volume you might want to look at discover as well. IIRC their business card gives 3% on office supplies and the like as well as 1% on everything else. their gas card (5%/1%) is my primary CC since feb 06, and the only issue I've had is that unlike my cap1 card it takes a few days before transactions are posted on the online statement even though they're counted against the credit limit immediately.

The one and only time i walked into that bank, i had a drivers license, SS card, and could probably have provided a birth certificate. I did not have an account there, but was willing to open one if they would have then cashed it, or even accepted it for deposit. Heck, i'd have even paid a service fee if that was required - i was headed out of town on vacation, and just wanted to take care of things before hitting the road. No dice. What really burned me though, was the refusal to accept a check written against one of their own accounts. I've never encountered that before or since, and still have no explanation for it. I spent close to an hour there, first with a teller, then one of the women who handles new accounts, then with two different managers... and nothing. For a check drawn on an account, the city government account at that, held by the bank itself. I've since heard similar stories from other people in town, with no good reason given. The fact that i was able to cash the check at another bank just made it that much more absurd. So much for patronizing local businesses...
