I show no hardware problems. Windows Media player is the default player. It starts up when the dvd is inserted. Then a message that says it cannot read the dvd because a compatable dvd decoder is not installed. Im not sure why yours would work and not mine. The only thing I can think of is you installed some software that had a decoder and Mediaplayer is usen it. Mark A

I have a GeForce3. It has built in decoding (or so I'm told). I belive some of the GeForce2s had it as well. That's the only reason I can think of that I would be able to play them. nay

This is new information to me Mike. Here we have an IMac and they always play DVDs on it. I don't remember anyone mentioning anything about a decoder. Does the IMac come with a decoder built in? Nish

I have zero idea how Macs work. Sorry. ;) Apple probably has a license to make a decoder themselves. --Mike-- Just released - RightClick-Encrypt - Adds fast & easy file encryption to Explorer Like the Google toolbar? Then check out UltraBar, with more features & customizable search engines! My really out-of-date homepage Sonork - 100.10414 AcidHelm

Recently got a pioneer 16x dvd player. Works fine as a cd player but cant play dvds with it. I tried doin a google search for dvd decoders and got a few hits. Every single one of them installs that gator spyware. Is there any free software out there that does NOT install spyware. Someone posted winxp home had dvd software. I am usen xp professional and didnt see it anywhere. Mark A

I'm sure there's some sort of registry modification needed to get WMP to play DVD's. Your DVD player really should have come with some OEM software to play movies. Simon I need your clothes, your boots, and your copy of VS.NET. Sonork ID 100.10024

OEM is correct. The drive came in a anti-static bag. There was no software or cables with it. When people say you get what you pay for, they were not kidding. Mark A

From what I remember, if you upgraded from 9x to 2K/XP and you had working DVD decoder software installed on the original system, then it will be kept and will be used by media player when you upgrade. If you never had any type of decoder, then it'll give the message you get -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!
