Do we really have report any article with the word 'iPod' in it, even the most obvious one? Every person with a pacemakers is well informed that he should keep electronic devices in a distance. The article also states that "Most pacemaker patients are not iPod users". This statement of course is not based on a scintific research, it's just common logic, ... a safe bet.

You would think they would design pacemakers/ICD's with more resistance to EMI, wouldn't you?

Actually, the do provide as much as they can, but that is limited (it is after all an implant, and needs to be limited in size. This does suggest, however that iPods (and perhaps mp3 payers in general) emit a surprisingly high level of EMI. One would expect a bit more shielding might be provided on these devices, since a bit of screen in the case would not add much to the cost.

Formula - Theory for not adding Sheilding (and most other Saftey things that make sense). iP = (iPods sold) cost = $0.06 per unit BLM = Butt load of money FCW = Fat Cats Wallet R = Resistance PCLS = Cost of possible Law suits iP * cost = BLM FCW - BLM = R PCLS < BLM = -R

I'd be curious if a flash based mp3 player would cause the same problems. I could see that the microdrive might cause more interference due to the magnets and moving parts/fields in the microdrive. On the other hand, could it be caused by the decoding chip itself?

Did you get that out of Lee Iacocca's old files? I think it was in the folder marked "Pinto development team."

No but I did think of that, having owned one in 74.
