I had this Vista DVD sitting on my shelf for a long time, waiting for all my required software to become compatible, and for an excuse to wipe my machine. Yesterday I was hit with a virus that slipped through Avast and decided that was the time. So I am now writing my impressions about Vista. Everything is so flashy... I am pretty sure I hate its UI. Distracting, cluttered, and it tends to ignore my widescreen-22" LCD screen width: Explorer likes to resize the columns to fit in a 640x480 screen, apparently. The shutdown button asks no confirmation. Sometimes the screen gets a bit messed, and it does not seem a driver issue - rather some drawing routine gone mad. Things like the Orb not getting grayed when UAC pops up, or desktop icons not drawn correctly when dragging windows. But what really bugs me is Office 2003: Outlook's sidebar is sometimes redrawn with the wrong font, the color scheme is bright blue (I can't really recall what was the default color scheme under Windows XP with Luna Silver, but it was perfect) and is SO annoying. My eternal gratitude to anyone knowing how to change it. UAC is not an issue, in a few minutes became just another automated click. I was quite impressed by the driver recognition, it just connected to Windows Update and got everything it needed - but the webcam (it accepted its W2K drivers though) and the Bluetooth dongle (the el-cheapo type, but I got it working anyway). I absolutely love the per-application audio mixer. Got a little puzzled by the file system, guess I'll have to learn where things really are now - those symlinks are damn confusing! Now let's hope the OS core is more stable than the cranky feeling that the UI gives...

I haven't tried Vista on my own machine yet, neither have I used it alot. I do remember some years ago when XP was released and I was still running Windows Me I had a lot of issues with XP as well as some compatibility issues (Eg. not being able to play Red Alert 2). But as time passes you'll look back and think how it would suck to have to go back to that old OS!

Well, I hope so. At least graphic drivers get update much more frequently than Windows' cosmetic bugs. However the problem I'm experiencing are not even slightly similar to the common random buffer corruptions that I had in the past with dodgy drivers, they rather seem the effect of errors in calculations. Whatever it is, these are not fatal errors, so the experiment is going to continue :)

I've tried our Vista Business and Vista Enterprise at my work, and Vista Business, Home Premium and Ultimate at home. So far, I've had a mostly positive experience with Vista overall. Aero Glass was not available on my nVidia FX 5200 video card in my media PC after installing the release version of Business. It did work in RC1. Part of the problem is the way the 128 mb of available ram is handled -- the card apparently has 32 mb of ram physically on the card, while the rest is siphoned off from system ram as needed. In Vista, that didn't leave enough ram to run Aero Glass when using the minimum of 512 mb. I've since updated the system to 2 gb and Aero Glass now runs normally. It is now running Windows Home Server CTP (wasn't using it as a media PC much) My "server" system is running Vista Ultimate. It uses an ATi X300 video card (listed as 256 mb, but using Hyper Memory -- see the nVidia FX 5200 issue above). However, it has 128 mb physically on the card, so it doesn't need to steal system ram to run Aero Glass (though it does so anyway for no particular reason). Since I'm running it as a system, I don't use it for more than file storage -- in fact, since I'm testing Windows Home Server, it's sitting to one side with the files from the media PC on it as a backup. If WHS works as advertised (and so far it has), then I'll likely install WHS on this system and cannibalize the drives from the media PC to add to the server storage pool. My main system is running Vista Business and XP Pro (dual-boot). It also has 2 gb of system ram and a video card with 256 mb of dedicated ram (ATi Radeon X1800). It's my one system running Vista that doesn't steal system ram for use by the video card. With all three systems, I haven't had too many difficulties getting my applications to work. Visual Studio 2005 was probably the most difficult to get to run, but a little research online got me pointed in the right direction and now I have the dev tools running. On my system at work, I had the lovely task of getting our Java lagacy apps to work in Vista without making changes to the applications. After a number of unsuccessful attempts, I was able to get things to load and work properly. It was some work since I had to end up taking ownership of some folders from the TrustedInstaller group, but I was able to leave UAC intact and get our applications to work with an account in the Users security group (both conditions of the tests). Flynn
