Best Linux?

I want to install Linux in a VM. What is the current best Linux? I have heard good things about Ubuntu.

I've been "playing" with Ubuntu for over a year and am currently running v7.04. It's VERY stable and hasn't disappointed yet, but then again it's on an older (and very basic) desktop so no exotic drivers are needed.

For development, I prefer CentOS[^] which is really a copy oh RedHat Enterprise. For home use, I would probably go with Mint[^] which is a spinoff of Ubuntu with additional drivers out of the box.

I have found SLAX[^] to be pretty good for different things. I current have Ubuntu/XP installed on a machine. Also found this GPart[^] to be a really good tool.

Just for grins, I installed it on a machine, but could not figure out how to get it connected to our network. I was ultimately wanting to be able to print from it, but since our printers are networked, it first must be able to see the network. Oh well...

Interesting the number of Linux versions listed in this thread that I've never heard of! Perhaps that explains why Desktop Linux will never take off. BTW, I assume you're aware of VMWare's VMPlayer app. that you can get preloaded with various distros? May save you time in evaluating the versions.

Well the UCLA LUG recommends either Debian or Ubuntu.

My co-workers use Debian [^] for servers. Rather "slim" but no/few GUI stuff. For desktop PCs they usually recommend Ubuntu [^].

Did it not "see" the network at all? In my experience with Ubuntu (and other distros as well), Samba often has trouble getting the names of the computers on the network and accessing shares via the computer names, but it works fine accessing shares via IP addresses (i.e. "smb://192.168.x.x/sharename").

I have installed FreeBSD on a low config machine(PIII 1 GHz, 128 MB ram, 20 GB). It takes up very little resources and very stable.

Whichever one you decide on be sure to get it by downloading via bittorrent. I just downloaded Ubuntu the other day to install in a vmware 6 vm. All the download sources listed would have taken many hours so I searched for a bittorrent link for the same file and found one and it took a fraction of the time to download it.

I know a lot of people think this gives more choice but in my opinion this is a large waste of resources which could be used in much better ways than reinventing the wheel. With that said I am an expert at gentoo and I find it difficult to use other versions of linux.
