Hi guys, Latest technologies are coming out at a very fast rate, eg, Ajax, Linq, C++/CLI, STL/CLI, C++0x, .Net3.x, WPF, Silverlight, WCF, WF, XNA and so on; it could be even faster in the future, considering how fast technolgy evolves nowadays. For me, I only need to keep up with the application technologies and no web technologies. I am wondering how long I and others here can sustain this, up to 40 years old? 50 years old? 60 years old? Now it may be quite fun for me to chasing up with the technologies but as when I am older and married, I would like to spend more time with my family. What is your own opinion, may I ask?

My personal way is: specialisation -or- R&D. These days I specialise on a specific field and try to be an expert on something specific (e.g. I focus on one language and one business field) rather than trying to have my opinion on everything. A few years earlier I was an earlier adopter of technologies and every few months did something completely new (R&D), this meant researching a topic and do some implementations for a customer. Both is fun. Someone could speculate what caused this shift, maybe I am getting older and lazier, maybe computer technologies have grown so much in diversity that you have to specialise in order to do something meaningful. However, I would not mind put my hand on the latest hype again... I found it more relaxing hacking together with interested customers than sitting in meetings with pointed-hair bosses and "engineers" who do the job because they are paid for and not because they love it. Btw, I don't think age makes a big difference... I have met brilliant people who are with over 40 as creative as a 14-year-old demoscene hacker. Hope it helps :)

Hmm... then what about sexual prowess? Just joking! I would say sometimes it is not up to us to choose because I work for a ISV who always want the latest technologies to attract customer to upgrade to the next version, eg WPF. "Jack of all trades and master of none" and Specialized Guru, each have its pro and cons. IMO, when you specialized, you have to specialize in some niche technologies which few people will fight with you for the job, so you are most valued by your employer as it is not easy to find a replacement within a short time. What is niche technology, depends on country and demography and size of the population and vibrancy of the IT industry. In my country, Singapore, there are not many C++ programmers and at the same time there is not many C++ jobs, when a company looking for C++ programmer to fill a vacancy, they have diffculty finding a competent one because all other competent C++ programmers have already working for others. Just my 2 cents!

I'm 39 right now, married five years, and I actually have an easier time keeping up o the technologies I need, because I've learned to focus JUST on the technoloies I need IMO, these days theres too much to be a generalist. Find a couple areas of technolgy you love, and specialize. At least it works for me.

Dear all, Let's me introduce myself first.I am .NET developer and 26 years old in age. I am still trying to become as a professional in .NET field. I would like to share any your opinion which concern with Developer life. Most of developer are expert in their related field and they can innovate as their desire. But I would like to know that why they cannot release their life as employee eventhough they can create and imigination with their own risk. If my question is very funny for you, I apologize it :sigh: but it will be useful and the way success for the beginning life of Developer. Thanks and Regards, Robin

The answer is depends on each individual, some are content being a salaried employee while some dared to dream to be his/her own boss but stop short of doing anything concrete to realize their dreams; they do not have the drive(or money) or do not want to take the risk to own his/her company.
