Windows XP updates... Ouch..
-
I just got through installing Windows XP Pro on my laptop (yes, XP, it is a 1ghz P3 machine with 256 mb ram, so Vista is not an option :( ). I thought I installed the SP2 version, but I run through some updates last night (to the point of falling to sleep during the udpates). Today I though I would finish them off and their were 78 updates pending, which I just finished a few minutes ago. Rebooted and checked updates again and two more waiting.. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining that there were updates, but boy this sure would suck if you were a dialup user :)

This reminds me those old days, when after formatting my HD, I had to install 98, Display-sound-every damn Motherboard thing drivers, office, IE6, winamp, winzip, Mediaplayer, VS6, MS JVM, MSDN...list never end....and usually it takes 7-8 hours :( and also after every install 98 needed a sweet restart. :( Just think. Phew those days...those 98 days...

I like the days of Windows 3.0/3.1 where I could reinstall the OS over the system, run my little program that populated groups in Program Manager with links to the different exe files find on my machine. No registry or any of that nonsense ;) From the sounds of it, Microsoft wants to get back to that day with their remoting profiles. Supposed to take the software along with your profile to be able to move from machine to machine without reinstalling software. That would be nice! Some do that now by using Virtual PC ;)

It feels like i always have the "new updates installed do you want to reboot now?" on my desktop. I usually do not restart immediately when they are installed and everytime i do restart the first thing that happens is that i get a message saying, "new updates available". X|

I have had to fix some peoples machines that were on dialup. Boy was that frustrating. I refuse to do that anymore as now I just take the computer. I really do not understand why this whole process could not be made simpler for dialup users. I mean I would like to download all the updates (when I am on a high speed link) burn them to a few dvds and be able to take this with me. At work I use WSUS which would solve this whole problem if I could use it on a laptop.

Yep. Mine stayed in an unupdated and unpatched state for quite some time until I switched to DSL.
