Mac vs. PC ads

Does anyone else find these commercials as ridculous as I do? I just saw the lastest one where PC is bloated with free software. How is this Microsoft's fault? The PC manfactures are the ones who fill up the systems with crap. Microsoft has also been forced to include other software.

Surely the point here is that you can run *many* applications on PCs and that there just isn't that much that you could load up on an Apple.

No, I find them absolutely hilarious. The point here is when you get a pc you end up spending countless hours removing crapware that you do not want. This is not a jab at Microsoft but at (Dell, Gateway ...). For me being a cooperate customer I am even more frustrated as how many times do I have to uninstall the 90 day version of some internet protection software only to have the uninstaller fail and I have to end up going to the web page to download some other uninstaller that safely removes the crap.

Who said is was? Apple is promoting the entire package: hardware, OS and bundled apps. That particular commercial is geared more towards HP, Dell, Acer, etc... than Microsoft.

Wasn't the ad was about PC vs Mac. (not Microsoft vs Apple). Do the ads refer to Microsoft in anyway? The statement that PC's are loaded with crap is true whoever fault it might be.

Naw, they're funny. Hodgman's delivery is just brilliant.

Who says it is? MS or no MS, it's still crap that you and i have to uninstall... or just give up and re-install the OS from scratch, download and configure drivers, etc. The "out of box experience" is what Apple sells... take it or leave it.

The UK version is amusingly localised too - the characters they use for Mac and PC are an irredeemable, amoral flash git and a loveable incompetent nerd respectively. I'm surprised Apple's godly marketing people didn't apply a bit of lit crit..

True is doesn't specifically mention MS but the jist of most of the commercials are aimed at MS, Vista in particular recently.

I never thought of them as being localized. It would be interesting to see the other versions.

On David Letterman they have a spoof of the Mac vs PC ads where the PC(B Gates) is sarcastic and bully's the Mac character. I somehow find these spoofs so funny to watch. I find the ad's kind of unfair given the number of markets and products that the MS products cover and doubt that Mac would be any different if they were in the same situation. I will concede that the Mac marketing department is quite brilliant though.

'cause Vista is the big new selling point. Vista is competition. BTW - if you've noticed, Microsoft's Vista commercials tend to not focus on "the box" at all - Microsoft doesn't sell PCs. Of course it's all a bit silly for you and me. Just as watching Jay-Z drag pictures with his fingers isn't likely to convince us to buy HP. We install our own OS of choice, with the software we need, and the configuration we prefer. We don't need to see shiny happy people on TV telling us which choices to make. Frankly, i consider the absurd part of all this to be that Apple, the shiny happy people Company, is running what are probably the most minimalistic, grounded computer ads on TV. No dancing, no magic, no "Minority Report" UI mockups that look nothing at all like the product actually being sold... Just anthropomorphism on white. It's like... watching a children's skit on food groups... or something... ...contrast with Shiny Happy VW's campaign of "slightly cheaper expensive cars bring universal happiness" ads. That's the sort of bullshit i'd have expected from Apple. Needless to say, i'm pleasantly surprised.

No. I rarely watch television, and when I do, the commercials are ignored or the channel is changed.

The Mac ads are the only commercials I will stop and watch when fast forwarding on my TiVo. I do find it a bit ironic that in these commercials have the Mac as the "Straight man" and the PC as the "Comic". See: Comedy Duo[^] But I love the commercials anyway.

I find them stupid, but hey, Apple knows marketing and they know you tell someone a lie long enough they will believe it, so they have to make it entertaining to cause people to watch.

I think the guy in the UK ad that plays the Mac played a not very sympathetic character in a British series about a company who runs a web portal I used to watch a few years ago. Strangely enough all I can remember is the fictitious company's url seethru.co.uk or something like that, not the name of the actual show.
