Alternative for outlook client ?

Ok, at my job we use exchange server. But apparently the new outlook clients will cost lots more money than before. So I wonder if there is any other 3rd party clients that got most of the outlook functionallity? (mail, contacts, calendar etc) Also clients that got such functionallity that work with other servers are intereseting to.. Prefferably something that doesnt look too much "linux port" nice standard win/office like gui would be nice..
Try Thunderbird. Version 2.0 has almost all the same features as Outlook.

You could look at OpenOffice.org. They have a product called Thunderbird. It, I believe, will work with POP3 and Exchange servers.

isnt thunderbird just a mailclient? does it have support for calendar and shared contact lists etc?

Yup, only POP or IMAP supported (plus RSS and newsgroups) No calendar (there is an extension for it somewhere, but nowhere near Outlook functionality)

I do not know any suitable alternatives (:cough: Lotus Notes :cough:.) Is there a special reason that you would need to upgrade to the new Office clients?

Yeah, but last time i have looked at it, sunbird was not ready for prime time. There is also Novell Evolution, which is reportedly able to connect to Exchange. But their Windows port is quite new and currently in beta:
Evolution for Windows In January 2005, Novell's Nat Friedman announced in his blog that the company had hired Tor Lillqvist, the programmer who ported GIMP to Microsoft Windows, to do the same with Evolution. The project released an alpha version of Evolution for Win32 on July 4th, 2006 and currently has an installer available for Windows XP. As of April 2007, a beta download[^] has been available from PC World (magazine). The Beta version is supported on Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista.
