Why does automatic update not take a hint? I installed the latest and greatest update and when the installation was through it asked if I wanted to restart my machine or do it later. Being engaged in some other activity involving a remote client I decided that I would rather finish up my business with the client and can wait until later to complete the update. Needless to say automatic update persisted in bothering me every 10 minutes or so asking if I wanted to complete the update by restarting my machine or wait until later. I already said I wanted to wait until later. I'm busy right now; bugger off! Why would anyone release such obnoxious software? X|

Vista's been bugging me for the past 3 days, wanting to restart. i wish there was a "Postpone Until Friday 5:30pm" option.

This won't be a popular thing to say, but... If auto-updates "took your word for it", a vast majority of users out there would never get patches installed because they would say, "later", then leave their machine on and forget about the patches. Patches need to be installed in a timely manner. We learned this from the blaster worm a few years ago when MS warned people months in advance, but since auto-updates weren't enabled by default (pre-XP SP2 days), people got hit and businesses lost millions of dollars. That said, I agree there should be some advanced setting that allows one to specify a date when to install them. Or maybe, "install when I'm not using the computer".

Just stop the service: Automatic Updates. That's the option corrsponding to "Remind me on Friday 5:30pm". :)

if you had the rights to do so this can be disabled IIRC via group policy editor. If not, just grab the upper left edge of the titlebar and drag it to the lower right corner of the screen effetively hiding it until you decide to reboot. The obnoxious award goes to avast AV however. When I told it later instead of doing nagware popups the next day it began a forced reboot when I kicked it out of screensaver mode that was only blocked by a save file before exiting dialog. ATM I'm almost disgusted enough to see if AVG has fixed hte problems with gmails secure connections that made me dump it in disgust two and a half years ago.

I just drag the little bugger in to the far lower-right corner of my screen, so I can only see 3 or 4 pixels of it.

I second that. Since they obviously know it is an issue and have added the options for Vista, why did they not add a longer one or better still an option to "Stop bothering me". On XP i always stop the update service after installing an update to get rid of the annoying dialog. If i do that on Vista the service restarts itself. X|

For us, it is a nag. But since it involves significant updates of system files, it tries to play safe to avoid damages to system files.
