MyBook USB 500G power supply

Could someone who owns a Western Digital MyBook Essential (USB, 500G) external hard disk let me know the unit's power supply specs (output voltage and current)? My cousin just flew in from NY and handed me one as a gift - and during her hasty packing threw out :wtf: the PSU and USB cable! The cable I can buy locally, but the PSU is nigh impossible to find online. And the WD store is out of stock and only ships within the US. I was hoping to buy a generic power supply but need its specs in order to do so. Thanks! /ravi

You can usually get those specs off the web, or better yet, they are often printed by the power inlet of the device. That's how I got power to my Zen W after airport security stole the power supply ( the device was with me )

I think my 320 GB drive has a PS with 12 V, 2 A output (not 100% sure about the current). Should be the same for a 500. Will have a look tonight if I can find it in my moving boxes and verify it...

Ravi, as luck would have it I have just taken delivery of one of these. No info in the manual (surprise) but the Power Supply unit (UK verison) has the following details on the label: Model No: DA-24B12 AC Input: 100 - 240 Vac 0.65A Max 47-63 Hz DC Output: 12Vdc == 2A L.P.S. (Limited Power Source) Manufacturer is "Asia Power Devices Inc" (APD). Made in China Good luck with finding a replacement. I have a similar problem with a D-Link DI624+ Wireless Router but managed to find a PSU from an old Palm Tungsten C which is almost ok (lower Amps but it works). :-D

Be very careful when doing this. The Amps a power supply lists is not what it does provide, but the maximum it will safely provide. The device will pull in whatever current it requires. If you have a 12V 300mA supply, and plug in a 12V 2A device, the device will try its best to drag 2A through the smaller supply. The smaller supply will provide this for a very short period of time, then overheat and start melting. Literally melting. :wtf: Great fire hazard. So in short... if you have a choice between a supply with a current rating too low, or too high, get the one that is too high.

I googled on DA-24B12 and found this http://www.mpja.com/productview.asp?product=15548+PS[^] I cannot vouch for the validity of the company but it's a start. I know that you can get a universal power supply from Radio Shack that will adjust voltage and all that for any computer device. It's around $90 as I recall. If you are in the U.S. Staples is running huge sales on them. So I'd call a few office supply stores and see if they have a return you can buy the supply out of. It's worth a try. But if you Google the model# like I did you should have some good hits.
